I got a really bad panic attack last month before leaving for an island for a friends destination wedding. I was there for 11 days and the entire trip was horrible as I was in a constant state of high anxiety and wanted to stay in my hotel room as every time I would leave I felt I could not breathe. Everyone must have thought I was really odd as I am normally so social.

So now this weird new panic disorder symptom has followed me home. After having a great period of 8 months with no attacks, now I feel like my panic disorder has shown a new face and has now taken over my life. Every time I leave the house I feel like I am on the verge of getting an attack and can not breathe. It is like I forgot how to breathe normally. Almost every time I have left the house the past 3 weeks I have ran home just trying to get air. It is scary and frightening and I am afraid I will never be able to leave the house and enjoy life again!!

Oh hun I am so sorry that you are having such a hard time right now. It is really hard when we have a really ok time with our PD then all of the sudden it comes back in full force and feels wrose than before.

What you have to rememeber is

1. It still is just panic you can breath through it by using proper breathing tech. and alot of selfwill-

2. Start your day out with a list of what you want to get done that day from the smallest thing to the largest (its ok it you dont do them all its just the point that you have a plan for the day and panic attacks are not in it)

3. Seek help - perhaps some therapy or talking to a close friend is all you need to help relive some tension that you may be feeling deep inside

4. Set sometime alone to meditate. I have a hard time doing this so i MADE a time 8pm everynight in the bath tub with some oils the help clam the mind and body (candles with the natural smell of lavender or jasmine help alot in this area) in this time I do my belly breathing 25 times and then say my personal mantra while I meditate for 20 mins atleast my mantra is "be still and know who I am" as I say this and lay in the tub I imagine a bright blue light starting at my toes and slowly filling my body up to my head once it reaches there (while still belly breathing and saying my mantra- I think about what it would feel like if this light poured out of the top of my head over my shoulders down my back like a water fall.... after my bath I read for 20min on my CBT (cognitive behavirol therapy) books or something else I enjoy learning about then off to sleep with some guided meditation CD on my ipod.

I hope you feel better soon if you need someone to talk to or any ideas of how to relax please feel free to post or PM any of us---

If things dont get better then you need to think about talking to your doctor about what he may be able to do to help you --- you dont want this PD to turn into agoraphobia then its even harder to get better

much love

lee

HI NY-Girl

Well, no wonder you are so stressed out - being over in cold london, rain every day, no friends nearby, little work or friendly situation for work, too much airplane ttravel, hubby out of town a lot, no kids to drag you down every day.

You need to think - restricting yourself to the home is a disaster - you cannot afford that luxery. You need to work hard to break out as quickly as possible - but take small steps.

You need to set up a laison with a doctor (if that is possible in london) - you need meds for in-case when you get a really bad attack. You need to be able to call in to review your new symptoms. You need to put a symptom ledger together to identify what symptoms have been reviewed and shown to be just panic. You need to come back here much more.

We care and we will help you. You can call this "NY panic city mdj". Cuse we do panic right.

We understand and will work with you. You are no longer alone.

Would you consider borrowing a kid or two - once and a while to help you and the mom ....could bring you so much joy and certainly would bring the mom some joy. But try to find one who does not wear diapers - they are so messy.

You need to set up chores to ge tyou out of the house ASAP. How about volunteering in the local hospital. You only need to work for a few hours at each time. How about joining a gym so you can tone up and meet some new friends. You are very pretty - so the people will hit on you very quickly. That could be a help. We all need friends. Being out of your element and alone - that is very hard on the stressors.

Go to the local church or whatever you like and join some clubs to meet people.

Most of the social organization i noted in good old london was the pubs - and their delightfully large pints of beer. Wow - could not walk a straight line for weeks.

We are so glad you have come to join us - work with us.

Hugs, and pudding, Raoul - ttfn

I'm an Advocate

I get the problem of fearing to leave my house because of panic (this is known as agoraphobia). It is all about practicing and taking baby steps. Running home and feeling good just reinforces your fears. You need to practice exposure and try to let the panic happen and take control of it or float through it. This is so very hard and trust me I am not going to deny this. I have a hard time with it, but am finding over the months it has been getting easier and I am having more success.

I recommend looking up some information on exposure therapy online. There is a lot out there that can help you. And we are here as well to help. If you are able to get a therapist to help you through the process of exposure therapy that would be great. If not don't worry you can and will still do it! Let me know if I can be of any help in any way!

Thank you guys for all your help. I forgot to mention that I am also newly pregnant so I can not take any medication. I am wondering if the pg hormones raging through my body is making the panic disorder worse. I only leave the house 1 time a week now and that is to go to my OBGYN for baby scans. I cant get on public transport anymore (I take taxis) as that takes too long and I am sure to get panic on the ways there - and ALWAYS rush home in a panic. Today I am going to try an acupuncturist. I am very afraid to go. I am already hyperventilating that I have to leave the house and it is 10 am. The appointment isn't until 3!!

And until that vacation I worked out at the gym 3-4 times a week. Now I am afraid of leaving the house so I do not go --which is really odd for me.

Hi Sweet Heart

That going to the gym is so helpful. It is an excellent thing to do for panic and to stop the fear(s). Please try to find someone to go with you for a while so you will feel safe. You really need to get out as much as possible.

Big hugs, Raoul
