Hi I am Harmony 28 and received a pace maker July 21. I am very self conscious about it along with my other 4 incisions on my chest area. I am not married or in a relationship so I am scared of what others will think . I am currently in a home health facility hoping to move out by the end of the year. I am so self conscious of the pace maker but it has really improved my life in the past month. I have lost some use of my left arm since due to nerve damage on previous surgeries which got worse with this implant. I don't know how to accept it all. I also don't know how to live as a non extremely sick person. I gave up my teaching license when the uncertainties of my illness came about. I don't know what kind of job I would enjoy doing. Also I need to make friends all over again. Any ideas for me? Also does any one have the biotronik cylos dr pacer?

Welcome to the forum. When I got my pacer in February it was all I could think about for many weeks. But as the incision healed, my self-awareness of the pacer also diminished. Now, unless I lay on it wrong or rub against it, I really don't notice it. Intellectually I know its there and there are a few precautions against powerful magnets that we have to keep in mind, but I think you'll find that you will become less and less aware of it as time goes on. Perhaps others' experience is different.

Many local agencies can help you with vocational counseling if you seek another career path, or with your teaching credentials you could probably sub a lot until you find something else. Just a thought.

Thanks for the support. I hope that I have the same self awareness recovery that you had. It is hard to get used to especially while I am doing pool physical therapy and have to obviously wear a swim suit. I do experience the pain when I roll on it or have something rub on it. I have a question for you do you ever hold kids and if yes does the pain affect it or are you able to enjoy time with them? My nephew is two and wants his auntie to play with him and all that fun stuff. Do you think that there would be any major issues if I see him in October?

I am not a Dr., but as long as you don't have any lifting restrictions from your Dr. I don't see any reason why you wouldn't be able to play with him or hold him. Use your right arm and hold him on your right side. By then I'm sure you will have healed more and it will be less sensitive. Talk to your Doc if you think you are not progressing fast enough. Have fun w/ your nephew. Probably he will be the best medicine of all!

The scars do go away, you can barely see mine. And if you have a good EP dr, you should be feeling better every day. I had a horrible one at first, but changed and he reprogrammed my pacer and I hve been feeling better ever since.
