I am so sorry you are having this problem. I have a large hernia I'm waiting to have repaired so I know how frustrating it is when your bag does not hold. I too have had my bag loose its seal. I know how horrible it feels with itching and burning from frequent changes and how your stool can damage your skin. I have been using skin prep wipes and this layer of protection has saved my skin and helped to prevent further breakdown around my stoma and anywhere the tape touches my skin. I'm not s...

Hello everybody,

Recently, I had a case of stomach flu that eventually turned out to be pancreatitis. While the coaches that I work with got the flu and was out of their system within a day or two, I got it worse because of my ileostomy. Since I no longer have a colon or rectum, I had nothing to keep fluid in my system. In short, everything I drank went through bag and everything I ate went back up. I got severely dehydrated and had to stay in the hospital for a few days while receiving a...

My girlfriend had her reversal surgery and it's all good, but we now have some leftover supplies. Our insurance and ileostomy supply place were such that we ended up purchasing supplies off of ebay because it was faster and cheaper with less red tape.

We've got a new full box of Convatec 413168 Sur-Fit NaturaŽ Two-Piece DurahesiveŽ Skin Barrier. (box of 10) that we'd like to sell. We paid $35 for the box, but will sell it for $26.00 free shipping.
We also have a partial box of HOLLISTER 18...

I am a woman who has an ileostomy for 23 years due to Crohn's Disease as a young person. I am 44 now, so I was only 21 when I had the surgery back in 1990. Back then I went to the support group on Data Point, but being so young at the time, I felt VERY out of place. So, I only attended a few meetings. Now I am 44 and a recent widow. The thought of dating after being with my late husband of 18 years scares me to death because of my ostomy. When I meet my husband all those years ago, I was scared ...

My name is Wade Lee Haron. I live in Flint, Michigan. I have been through several months of 'hell' per se. My colon ruptured in early June 2012. I had emergency surgery and ended up with a colonostomy. I nearly died from several complications and was flown to an out of town hospital to spend several weeks in their Sugical Intensive Care Unit. After several weeks, I was transported back by ambulance to my home hospital where I stayed another few weeks. I had a 2nd surgery when my stoma started cl...

Hang in there. It will get better. Have you tried putting cloth tape or athletic tape around your wafer. I always put tape around mine for added support. I use the Coloplast Sensura base plates and pouches. They work great for me. I can wear my wafer and pouches for about a week before it starts to leak. Milk of Magnesia works for my skin if it becomes too irritated.

Hope this helps.

Hey all. My Father has had bladder removal (urostomy) and a colostomy (due to injury during the bladder surgery) all in the span of 1 year. He is getting stronger and healthier and more active (thank you Jesus!) He now needs advice regarding ostomy belts. My Father is very private and is looking for something that is comfortable, will not show under his clothing and will not block or impede the flow from his stomas. Does anyone have any recommendations? Remember, he has to have something ...

I agree with many on this forum that marshmellows help slow down output, especially when I know I will be changing my bag and wafer. Peanut butter also works for me.

For thickening the stool, applesauce works. For me, the more liquid the stool, the better for me because it is easier to remove from bag and I don't have to add water to bag to remove more solid stool....

Hi,

I had to have a high colostomy (upper right quadrant, near the diaphragm) a year and a half ago due to severe infection (peritonitis) from acute necrosing pancreatitis, which really messed up my intestines, causing a stricture and internal fistula.

I use Coloplast bags, and soon found out that the vent only functions for 12-24 hours, and then I was having the same problems as you with the bag ballooning out with gas and liquid at night, often causing the bag to lose adhesion from ...

I use to empty my bags but some always was behind an couldn't take knowing there was some still there an always afraid of the smell. I could smell it so I knew other people could too. As for my wafer breaking down I only change it about every 7 to 10 days so I think that is pretty good. The bags last that long also. As for the smell when I was emptying the bag I bought this deodorizer for this purpose ($25.00) but it never worked very good. Thanks for replying as I like hearing from other peopl...

I agree totally with dmtosis. Walk by faith. When you find that special someone, he will love all of you and most importantly for who you are. I know it seems strange, but you will know when the time will be right to discuss your ostomy. There is no exact time to tell, but you will know when it is the right time. Trust yourself.

With an ostomy or illeostomy, nothing is always normal but rather unique. Not odd, not weird, but unique. Although it might not feel normal, it is probably mor...

Hello,
I had surgery in March 2012 and I am doing great. This is my second rectal cancer. I was cancer free for nineteen tears.
I ended up with rectal removal and a permanent colostomy. There are so many foods that give me gas. For the most part I have figured out which foods and try to avoid them. I am on xeloda and nearing the end. I have one more round. My question is will I ever get my flat stomach back. I wear pants a size larger to accommodate my waist. Anyone else have this pro...

Hello Ashley,

The best advice I can give you is to do what you are already doing: being the great sister that you are and always being there for your sister.

It sounds like she just had the surgery. Those first few weeks after surgery were brutal and took a while to get adjusted. Besides the pain after the surgery, the biggest adjustment was to get used to changing the ileostomy bag. It can be very degrading and frustrating when waste shoots out of stoma all over the place and there is...
