A lot of people think that Ostoprosis is only for old people, but that is not true, i am 48 and have it for almost 8 years. I got it because of being on a very high dose of Prednisolone (Steroids) for my Asthma, no one told me at the time that it could couse me to get Ostoprosis, so i live with it just like the rest of you. I have lost the uses of my left leg to it because of my knee, i am in a wheelchair must of the time, but i do try to walk as must as i can. I go to a group here where i live and there are young children here with it. so it is not an old person illness, and i wish people would learn this.

Your exactly right marymum. So glad to hear from you again. I never really realized it until I was diagnosed in my 30's after having a hysterectomy. As I said in another post it does not just effect women either. I think they have made alot of progress in the past few years with treating it. I remember thinking years ago when Fosamax first came out why would I want to take a medicine to prevent something that may not happen to me. Of course I was very young and niave at the time. If I knew than what I know now..... I also never knew how debilitating and painful it could be until I was diagnoses and started learning about it.

that's the think because people can't see it, i you had a broken leg or arm people could see. but wiith this they don't know how painful it can it. I just want to cry sometimes but i want let it get the better of me.I just wish more people knew more about it, like you said why take something that may never happen to me, i am sure lots of woman and men have said the same thing, and are looking back now and thinking my did i not learn more about it. I was very niave not beening told that i could get it with the meds i was no, why don't the Doctors tell you these things, at lest you have the chance to check up on it and see what it can do to you.

Your right sometimes the long term side effects are glossed over about medications and sometimes you are between a rock and a hard spot as far as do you take something that can help your condition now or don't because it can hurt you later. It is so important to be aware of our conditions and treatments so that we can make the best informed decisions about our lives.

all i take for the Osteoporosis is Calcichew-D3 I was on Fosamax for a while one tablet a week but because of all the other meds i take (32 in all) i found that it did not work the way it should and i was very ill with it. I take Morphine 60mg twice a day with helps the pain but i do wish they would find something else for my condition which works.

If I remember correctly you are in another country correct? if I'm wrong I appologize. but here there are a couple different alternatives. 1. Is a daily injection called Forteo and the newest one is a once yearly IV infusion. I believe the medication name is Reclast. From what my doctor told me it was a medication that was used to treat bone cancers but in smaller doses at once a year they found it to help Osteoporosis. If it has been ahwile since you've discussed treatment with your doctor bring it up at your next visit to see what may be available. Do you see a specialist for it or just your regular doctor? sometimes your regular family doctor may not be up on the newest specialty treatments or more leary to use them because they don't have alot of experience with that particular treatment. I hope they find something for you that will not only treat your pain but help you to build back what has been lost

Your welcome. I don't know if they would be called the same in Scotland or not I will try and get the chemical names for you too since sometimes a brand name will be different in another country

Than you i have started taking glucosamine i had never heard of it before but you could buy it over the counter but could not get it from your doctors, buying it over the counter cost £45 i not sure how much that would be on U.S.A $ about $85 or sometime like that, but now you can get it from your Doctor and because over here we have the N.H.S i can get if from the doctor for nothing because i am too sick to work, i do fined i get some help with this because it works on the joints so that does help but it does not get rid of the pain. So anything you know off will be a God send, thanks again. Well i am going to try to get some sleep now as it is 2:20 in the morning here i find it sometimes very hard to sleep. But i pray the Lord will help me tonight as i am really sleepy. God bless my friend and look forward to hearing from you soon.

I looked up both drugs

Forteo is teriparatide. this is the daily injection

Reclast is zoledronic acid injection and this is the yearly IV infusion. I don't know pain wise what it will do until of course it can build back some bone mass. I hope that these options are available to you where you live and that your doctor may consider them if they are. Good luck and keep me posted it will be interesting to hear if they are
