Saw my neurologist today for follow-up. Gave him a paper I wrote "My Life with ON", detailing specifically how this has affected my life. He read it, was very nice about it, said he DID understand, and put it in my file.

Typical exam, pressing on the nerves that "put me thru the roof". He asked me to let him do a nerve block again, hoping for better results this time. (He did one last year, I had 7 days of no pain then back to pain-with-a-vengence). Said he wanted to do 2 nerves this time.

Ok, he did both sides, the occipital nerve, and the (sp?) auricular nerve. I imagine most of you know the pain involved. After he was done, he suggested I stay in the office for a while, to let it start becoming numb. I think he didn't want me going thru the waiting room with my face all blotchy from crying Smile

I go back in 4 weeks.

Since I already had a major headache from the car ride and the nerve blocks, I decided to go ahead and get a hair cut. Happy with the haircut, I figure with my thick hair, it will help a bit having a little weight off my scalp.

Been a rough day, at least hubby has been really sympathetic and helpful. Thanks for letting me vent, again.

Annie

Hi Annie,

It really sucks when you have days like that. I am so glad your doc read your list and showed understanding. I hope you have some pain free times with the blocks.

Hang in there.

Gentle hugs,

Chloe

I am not a medical professional. I sufferered Occipital Neuralgia and had right and left occipital nerve release surgery in 2010.
Before surgery I would throw up almost daily from the severe dizziness and had severe light and sound sensitivity. I stayed in bed, curled up in the fetal position wishing I had the courage to kill myself. If I didn't take a cocktail of antiseizure, opiates and muscle relaxers I suffered hundreds of electric shock type pains per day in my head and had a constant migraine type pain 24/7 from july 2008. I lay grieving for my life that once was the friends who once were and the void in my future.
Right surgery 100% relief; left surgery, scarring grabbed a crown nerve and I had surgery again to relieve that june 2011. Surgery really helped but was left with daily migraines triggered by certain sound pitches making living in this noisy world very difficult

Annie, I don't know you, but I do know the pain and the frustrations. I pray that the latest blocks help for you. My first ones gave me 6 pain-free days, and I'm praying that you get many more than that. You are fortunate to have a neuro that is at least trying to help.

And good for you on writing a paper explaining your situation. I have thought about it, but I don't know if I would have the words and not sound like I'm crazy. Up until just a couple of years ago, I had never met anyone with the same condition. And every doctor and specialist just kept throwing up their hands and made me feel like a freak of nature. I'm sure we've all felt that way, especially during a bad bout. I'm very thankful to have finally learned about this website. From what I've gathered, this is one of the few safe places we can "vent" so please do so. I'll probably be posting a similar thing if I can ever get my new insurance to authorize a pain clinic for me.

blessings to you and your family.

(because someday I'll get better and can ride again)

I have had ON since a car accident in 1983, but I didn't get a diagnosis until 2004. I struggle with constant pain and the "other" neurological effects of ON. You can find me on twitter as @asideofpian.

Scott - the paper I wrote was only like 3/4 page in length. It's short paragraphs stating how ON has affected my daily life, someone here suggested it.

Here is a part:

"Riding in a car for more than 10 minutes usually brings on pain. Doesn't matter if I am driving or not, front seat or back. The constant movement of my head/neck is uncontrollable in the car. An hour drive = level 8 headache within an hour at minimum.

I've enjoyed sewing since I was a young girl. Made most of my own clothing and my childrens' as they grew up. Crafted extensively over the years. Now I am only able to sit at my sewing machine or crafting table for 10 - 15 minutes at a time. Very difficult to hand sew or quilt, to painful to sit in the position necessary. Same for sitting in same position to do any task, must get up and move often. "

It was helpful for ME to just put it into words. And my doc REALLY needed to know how I felt. He sees me for 20 min. a month. I live with this 24/7 (as all of us here do!) And I didn't write it all at one time. Took many days, kept going back to it. You should try it.

This recent nerve block - I see no change so far. The first block I had, last fall, took 7 days to "kick in", I then had 7 pain free days, then the pain returned in full force. Today, my scalp is still really sore, but duh, I had 20 injections - so no wonder.

In my honest opinion - to go thru the pain of the nerve blocks just is NOT worth a few days of no pain. The recent blocks were 4 areas of 5 injections each. He kept saying "after this first injection, this area should be numb for the next 4". I kept saying NO, IT IS NOT NUMB EVEN THRU #5.

It's weird. He says my scalp would be numb like a tooth does with novacaine, both times I had the blocks. But I couldn't say it was numb, it hurt like hell. (sorry for that). And both times it brought on whopper headaches.

Chloe and Arlet and the rest of you - thank you so much for your support, it DOES help Smile

Just call me Annie the Bear -since I'm growling alot lately....

My head always got worse before it got better with the blocks too. It can take 5 days or so for the steroid to kick in and I only stayed number for a couple of hours - by the night of the blocks my head was hurting really bad....

I totally understand...Trixi

I'm on Day 6 after the block. Woke up with headache, that always a sign I'm gonna have one of those days...LOL (or at least trying!) There's been no change in pain since the blocks - in fact my ear's been pounding a lot lately, but still hoping that maybe tomorrow it'll be a little better.

Going to take my meds, then maybe go outside...the sun is finally shining here in Ohio....If I can stand the brightness, maybe I'll perk up a bit. Trying to stay positive Smile

Sometimes the pain from O.N. can make you want to crawl in a corner and scream to the top of your lungs! So I've learned to cherish the good days when I don't feel like I have an ice pick stuck in my head!
