Namaste!

A day ago someone new came onto the board. they found a post dated over a year ago and decided to comment. I am sorry to say that their response was very misinformed and i wanted to take this moment to do some clarifying. there are many of us in this group who have what is known as pure o. pure o is where the obsessions and the compulsions are internal. a person with pure o could be having an episode and no one would know because there is no external compulsion. there are many common fears that are associated with pure o. among them are:

fear of becoming or being a killer

fear of becoming or being a pedophile

fear of harming or of having already harmed someone such as a loved one

fear of harming self

these are common fears of pure o. pure o, as with all ocd spectrums, is a neurological disorder. current theory holds that ocd is caused by a neuro chemical imbalance and is theorized that it is genetic. meaning that a person who develops ocd is genetically predisposed to developing it. I want to state right now that ocd is not caused by any fault of your own! ocd causes anxiety and the anxiety causes fear and the fear causes anxiety. intrusive thoughts are a symptom of ocd. simply having an intrusive thought does not make it so. say for instance you have pocd. that does not make you a pedophile. there is a huge difference between neurosis and psychosis. a pedophile does not worry that they are one. they know. a pedophile is attracted to children and does not feel anxiety or sickened by such thoughts. instead they take pleasure in them. same with a sociopath. we fear what we despise. so for anyone who read that post yesterday that was very misinformed please do not let it worry you. you are so not what you fear. and thoughts and actions are two very different things. a thought is just a thought. it is not tangible. and you cannot control thoughts. no one with ocd has ever acted on their fears. so simply thinking something does not make it so. that is called magical thinking.i am not sure yet if the person was misinformed or if they were simply trolling.this is a safe group. a place for healing. i apologize to anyone who read yesterdays post. it slipped through the crack. we will do our best to ensure it does not happen again...however, sometimes things will slip through before we have a chance to read them.

remember, a thought is a thought and a fear is a fear. they are NOT who you are!

Namaste!

Hello Nick! I did not read the post you are referring to. I just wanted to thank you for posting this message because I learned something about myself and my OCD that I didn't know had a name for it. I don't just have OCD, I have PTSD and Bipolar I, rapid cycling with Schizo-Affective tendancies. My PDoc says that I am highly functional. I've spent a great deal of time learning what I can about Bipolar and Schizo-Affective disorder and until I just read your post didn't know how to explain my OCD, because there weren't too many outward signs, it was all internalized with thought patterns repeating themselves. This past summer my OCD became more apparent on the outside, because I was actually doing things that others could see and this frightened me to some degree when I discovered it for myself because it was no longer something that was just in my head. I don't know how to explain my feelings regarding it. I just really wanted to say thanks for for explaining what Pure O is.
