Hi, I'm new to this group. My 9 year old daughter's symptoms are a good fit for NDPH. She was thrilled to have a name for her stuff and some validation that she was sick even though most of the tests have been inconclusive. Except one. She just had a heavy metals test and she showed elevated levels of mercury and lead. Has anyone else tested positive for heavy metals? Have you done anything about it? I've had other friends with chronic pain conditions that have improved after they've had the metal removed. I'd love any comments.

How do you get tested for heavy metals? Is it a blood test? As far as I know I have not been tested, but they took a lot of blood back at the beginning of this headache and I really didn't know what they were testing for. It sounds like something that I should be looking into.

Edit- Sorry I just got so interested in what you were saying that I forgot to welcome you to the forums. Welcome! I hope your daughter is able to find relief soon, and thanks for pointing the rest of us in this direction, since I don't think anyone has tested me for this yet.

It's a urine test. Bonding material is pumped into the blood via an iv. Then the instructions are to drink lots of water and collect all your urine for 6 hours. Then it goes to the lab. It takes a government approved lab to diagnose. From looking online, it appears that 73% of autistic have favorable to very good results after removing the mercury. Since they have some of the same symptions like being sensitive to light and touch, it only seems like there might be some coorelation.

I have definitely not been tested for that. I will start reading up on the symptoms (besides headache...obviously I have that) to see if this might be something I need to get done.

Since they have found this result (and I presume they believe it is the cause of her other symptoms) does this give them a treatment plan, or is their method of treating her headacbehes still unclear?

It would make sense to me since (from what I have found on the internet) elevated lead can cause headaches and a lot of other symptoms that the first thing to do would be to try to get that under control and see whether that helps...but I am not a doctor and only read a little bit on the internet.

The medicines they use for chelation therapy do seem very strong (again from what I read on the internet) so it might help your husband feel more comfortable with the idea if the doctor talking about it has done it a lot with children. I know that would make me feel better if I were worried about it. I would NOT want someone who was used to giving adult sized doses trying to guess how much to give to a 9 year old. Even if it was someone who worked with kids all the time it would still sound a bit scary.

I hope you and your husband are able to work out some sort of agreement on what to do about this for your daughter.
