Hello, Everyone!

I am new to the forum. Any advice or experience you may have to share is greatly appreciated!

My husband was diagnosed with viral meningitis (enterovirus) at the end of April 2011. He spent 5 days in the hospital and was discharged. Since the beginning of his bout with meningitis, he has suffered with constant headaches on a daily basis. Before the meningitis, he very rarely had a headache. He was a healthy, 34 year old male whose only issue was neck pain associated to a disk fusion at c5-c6 (due to ruptured disk). The surgery was appx 4 1/2 years ago. Now these headaches have overshadowed any pain he ever experienced before. Since the onset of meningitis, his head pain has lessened in intensity, though it is always present at varying degrees. His worst headaches have always been above and around his left eye.

About a month ago, my husband became a patient at the Diamond Headache Clinic in Chicago, where he was diagnosed with NDPH. He was admitted to their inpatient unit for a 4 day stay where he received 9 rounds of intravenous DHE. He now takes Celexa and Vivactil daily. His abortive medications are Migranal (DHE nasal spray to be taken 2 days weekly) and Norflex (pill to be taken 3 days weekly). Happily, he feels that intensity of his headaches have improved. He has been fortunate to have a general decrease in intensity since the onset of meningitis. Still, they are always there. However, since a week ago, he has been suffering from eye pain in his left eye with any movement. Before a week ago, he would have headaches around his eye, but it was never affected by movement. Now there is a jabbing, sudden pain with any left/right or up/down movement. He was prescribed a 5 day run of the steroid Dexamethasone but it had no effect. Has anyone had a similar issue? His MRI & MRA were both normal. His eye doctor said that his optic nerve and general eye health is normal. Any advice as we move forward? Maybe a stronger steroid? We have an appointment with his neurologist on Tuesday. It also may be noteworthy that he had a flare up in neck pain around the same time (week ago).

I would appreciate any comments that you may have!

Thank you,

Amy

I too suffer post viral meningitis NPDH headaches. I've had mine since April 2007. My pain is mainly frontal pressure with pain on the top front and occasionally pain in my ears. I've tries many meds, and seen many specialists. I don't have eye pain, but no one is the same when it comes to this disease. Is he developing a migraine disorder on top of the headache disorder? I few people suffer from both on here.

Hi and welcome.

I don't have specific eye pain, more pain around the eye area as most of my pain is pressue in the front of my head and around my sinuses. I do remember quite a few people posting that they have had eye pain though so it might be worth doing a search.

I have also tried DHE and dexamethasone among many other things. The dex didn't help me either. I got some minor short term relief from the DHE. It sounds like that had some effect? I think the trick is finding the right combo of drugs.

Did the neuro have any ideas at the appt?
