This week is TAKS tests in Texas for my kids...including my homebound NDPH'er! She will be taking her Reading TAKS 5th grade test on Wednesday! We would appreciate ANY/ALL prayers for a good, clear cognitive day on Wednesday!!! She is getting to take it at home, w/ teacher, but it can't be read to her. We did order an enlarged print, hoping to eliminate some of the eye strain for her. There is alot of reading material and then questions about it. She is a BRILLIANT child, who has done remarkably well since she has been sick---her lowest report card grade is 98 right now! But...the last practice TAKS she did was harder for her to concentrate and remember. She had to do it over several days and reread much of the material several times. The test has to be done in ONE DAY, ONE SETTING.

Since her symptoms have been worse, and we've increased meds this week-end, I am concerned. Please remember us in your thoughts and prayers on WEDNESDAY...actually on Tuesday night, so she can get a good night's rest!!!

Thanks,

Oh how awful to still have to take those standardized tests! I kind of liked them when I was in school (ok, I was weird) but not with a HEADACHE! I know they can't wait until her headache is gone (who knows how long that will take) but I do wish she could take breaks. I would say try caffeine since that is how I got through my craft shows as well as I did, but she clearly can't do that with all the tachycardia she has already had. I will pray that something helps.

Just a thought - sometimes the black text on white paper combination makes it difficult for me to read when my head is particularly bad. Certainly in the UK, you can get exam papers in pale yellow paper or something like that, it takes the glare off a bit. I guess it's too late for that this time, but sometimes a piece of thin lightly coloured acetate (light blue or something) over the piece of paper can help.

My bro has a mild learning difficulty condition thing (I can't remember the name) that means it's a lot easier for him to read when it's not black on white. It just happens to work for me too, which I've always put down to the headache.

Ok, too early in the morning here (I'll blame it on that) not sure how much sense I've made! It's just a thought anyway...

My sister lives in Texas and my niece breaks out in psoriesis (sp) every time she has to take the TAKS test. I will certainly remember you daughter in prayer when I remember Logan.

God Bless,

You are never alone,

Sandi

PS she lives in Woodville, Texas I think it is 1 hour northeast of Houston. I live in Maryland.

Thanks for ALL the replys!!!

She can take breaks during the tests!!!

The idea of using colored paper vs. b/w has been discussed and our dyslexia teacher at the school is getting us some of the covers, I just don't know if it will be in time for this testing time!

As long as she can take breaks and take her time, I think she will do okay. (and especially w/all the prayers!!!)

I know where Woodville is---my bro. lives in Houston. We are actually an hour north of Dallas.

IF she is having a bad day, they said we could do as if she were absent (but she can't have any more absentee days w/out having to go through review committee...YUCK!) If absent on the day of TAKS, you can retake the retake day....but, since this doesn't seem to get any better, only worse, I don't really want to put off the inevitable! She will do the Sci. one in April and the Math in May. So, we still have more to go in the months ahead!

I'll let ya know how our day goes!

Oh, the caffeine tip is worth a thought....as long as she isn't too tachy that day!!!

I am so glad they are letting her take breaks. That seemed like absolute cruelty without them. I think it will give a much better indication of what she is actually capable of with breaks and that is the point of taking the tests in the first place.

I wish you had more time to test caffeine on her to see if it helps or hurts her...maybe save the it for one of the later tests so you have a chance to do a trial run and make sure it doesn't make her too distractable. I don't know how well I would be able to concentrate if I had any tachycardia to begin with, let alone adding caffeine on top of it. She might just get wiggly...that is probably what I would do. So glad that the testing accommodations are working out in time.

SHE PASSED!!!! YEAH!!!!

On April 8th, Texas 5th graders will be taking the MATH TAKS. I talked w/the principal this am and let him know she will NOT be taking the TAKS. It is possible she may be hospitalized during this week...but even if she isn't, I am taking a stand: I DO NOT WANT HER PERFORMANCE EVALUATED WHILE ON THESE MEDS!!! It WOULDN'T be a true evaluation! Though she is able to maintain high-A's in school, I just don't think testing is appropriate given her situation. I prayed about talking to our principal and I believe God prepared the whole situation and everything went smooth!!! I didn't even have to discuss my prepared arguement!

Texas offers a retake in May and another in the summer----we will wait and see...but he did say we don't have to worry about it! So, I will stand by our decision to NOT TEST if on meds!!!

(* GOTTA BRAG: My 3rd grade twins were comended performance for their reading TAKS! My girl made 100% and my boy made 98%!!!)

Parents of chronically ill children, STAND UP FOR WHAT YOU BELIEVE IS RIGHT FOR YOUR CHILDREN....YOU MIGHT BE SURPRISED AT WHAT YOU CAN GET DONE!!!

Congrats for your kids on doing so well, specially your daughter having to deal with all the headache and other crap at the same time. I think it's great that you're prepared to take a stand for your daughter - schools aren't always receptive so it is really down to the parents.

I am so glad that she passed and even happier that she doesn't have to deal with the math test with the way things are right now. Way to stick up for your girl. And congrats to your twins for their incredibly GREAT scores!
