My headache began (8/26/08) 3 days ago. It does not respond to tylenol or Ibuprofin. I do have a recent history with illness that could be the cause and have also been taking some new medications. My history is thyroidectomy on 6/24/08. Papillary carcinomas in thyroid on path results. RI-131 ablation dose given 8/20/08. TSH was as high as 193 last week. Began levoxl and cytomel again 8/23/08 so I am still hypothyroid and will be for 3 weeks as meds build up. Also have been having bad reflux for 10 days and started taking Pepcid 20mg twice a day on 8/25/08. So I was blaming the pepcid but stopped it and still have the awful constant headache. The other possible problem is adjusting to being back on thyroid meds. I am sensitive to sounds and have not found any relief.

Hi Wd10, Sorry to hear you are having such troubles. I don't know a whole lot about thyroid problems and the complications that come with them, but I looked up levoxyl and cytomel on webmd.com and both of them can have headache as a side effect. Given how little thyroid hormone your system has been used to having I would not be surprised if you are getting headache as it is suddenly shocked with a lot of it again. I think I would contact whatever doctor is working with you on that to see if this is a normal thing that you should just work through that your body is likely to adjust to or if you may need to get back to normal more gradually (or if it is something else entirely).

As far as practical ways to function when you are sensitive to sounds, I control my environment as much as I can and I keep earplugs with me all the time. I hope you and your doctors are able to get this headache under control quickly.

Thanks Mary, I have called and been called back by my endocrinologist. He is a great guy but a bit inflexible (?word) I think. He says that it is not typical to have headaches from these but I also feel like it could be the cause. As I have had about all I can take of feeling bad over the last several weeks, I decided to just go and see my Primary Doc this afternoon and see what he can do. Normally, I can tough it out for a bit longer but I've been toughing out one thing or another since June and I am not feeling all the tough right now.

I might also talk to a pharmacist to see how common it is to get headaches with these meds. They generally won't tell you what to do about it (they are very careful not to get into doctor territory), but they maybe able to help you figure out if this is a fairly normal thing to have happen given your dosages. It just seems really coincidental to me to have all this happen at the same time. I am sure you feel really terrible right now with your TSH as high as it is and all the things you have been through. I can totally understand not feeling tough right now given your circumstances. Take things as easy as you can and hopefully your primary doc will be more help than the endocrinologist.

=I have Hasimoto's throiditis - diagnosed a year ago. My TSH was 123. I still have ultrahigh levels of antibodies byt my TSH has normalized on Synthroid. However the headache has persisted for 18 months. My neuro did an LP and didn't find any signs of inflammation. However, I think it is too much of a cooincidence that this daily headache started with my hypothyroidism.

I had chronic hashimoto't thyroiditis and papillary carcinomas in the thyroid as well. I am going to have to switch primary Doc's. I have been to two Doc's about the reflux and my husband who refuses to treat family was so disgusted he finally wrote me a prescription for the acutal reflux as he said the other Doc's were not treating his wife with the proper meds. My primary Doc has been trying to give me Valium every time I go to see him for any complaint - I work in the medical field and have never heard so much talk of Valium in my life as from this guy. Not to mention he tried to listen to my heart and lungs through my breast (twice) and NO One has ever tried to hear anything through my D size breast. I gave him a look and said I was tired of Dr. appts. but I wimped out on an actual confrontation.

One more note for twinmom. I have seen and tried to find it- I'll look more later- and article on hypothryoidism and NDPH. That is what lead me to this forum. Gotta take son to school.

The second article is about NDPH and thyroid conditions. My headache is actually better today and I HOPE will stay that way. Keep in touch, I hope you find a solution soon. I could barely stand 3 days of it. Do you see an endocrinologist for your thyroid condition?
