I have a dilemma: I haven't been to school in over a month and can't do work for over 5 minutes so a tutor or home schooling wouldn't be much use. I am phonophbic so school is a real killer because it is SO loud and ear plugs don't work. I found these things called custom ear plugs. They mold the plug to your ear but it is pricey and I am not sure I would wear them much in public cause people would notice and then I have to tell the whole explanation on what is wrong and why I am wearing them. Me not going to school is getting the whole family stressed, especially me. I think I should quit as I am not going anyway but I know i will regret the choice after wards. I just can't deal with the constant talking about 'are you going to school now?' and 'do your work!'. I was a very good student before and the school I am going to has a very little work load. Maybe I should quit, relax a bit and then do some 'virtual, online courses' if I feel up to it [I could finish them faster and go at my own pace so if i would miss 2 months, I wouldn't have to start over since i have up to 2 years to complete them!]. I am going to wait until I go to see Dr. Rozen at MHNI and then make my decision. Just thought maybe someone has some suggestion on what I should do.

THANKS,

Jonathan

Lol...Must have typed 'I' 5000 times!!!

Hmmm, this is a hard one, I hope that Dr. Rozen is able to help, though I know you are not expecting to go inpatient for a while. I would definitely bring the problem up with him to see if he has any suggestions for things you can do.

I am wondering if there were a way to make the stress of school stop for a bit if it might help you to be able to regain your resources to start again, even if you didn't officially quit. Maybe see if your parents would be willing to join you in an experiment since what is happening now isn't working. Ask them to give you a week (or however long you can all agree to) or so where they do not mention school to you at all. If you feel good enough to do it you will, if not you won't, but it will be your own motivation driving you and it will take the pressure off. You aren't actually expected to get anything done that week and then see if your headache is milder or if you are better able to cope with the headache and the stress of schoolwork the following week.

The way I see it, if you are considering quitting completely taking a week break to destress and try to get some perspective won't hurt anything and it might help a lot, particularly if your headache tracks with your stress level (as some of ours do).

Quitting school is a pretty huge decision, if there is no way to avoid it then you do what you have to, but definitely try to get your education somehow. I don't know how the system works in Canada with tutors, homeschooling, online courses, ect. so I can't give much advice on what to do if you can't manage your current school situation. I would talk it over with your parents since they are sure to have some opinions on the subject and I expect they do know the Canadian school system, as well as the job market ect.

Again, I hope that Dr. Rozen will have some good ideas and be able to give you a lot of help so that you won't have to figure all this out.

I'm 16 and homeschooled, lucky for me i was before all this started. I've got a great academic advisor at my umbrella school who just tells me to do everything i can and not push myself. As i'll be a seinor next year that makes it difficult. I'd suggest some curriculms that aren't so difficult and trying only a few subjects at a time but working through the summer. That's help me alot.

Hi,

I am not sure quitting completely would be the best idea, but there are other options.

I know that you can get a disablity qualification for both college and high school- basically you would need a letter from your dr stating that you have migraine and the accomadations you need. Mine allows for leniancy in attendance, ability to make up stuff due to migraine, etc. If you are in public school, you would need a 504/IEP plan. In college, you would simply need to contact the disability office at the school.

What grade are you in? My headaches became chronic in my Junior year of high school and I missed 6 weeks during both my senior and junior years. (I had to leave boarding school in Jan. of sr. year to return to my old day school so I could be at home.)

As summer is approaching, could you take incompletes this semester and finish the courses over the summer? This might give you more time. You could also see if you can get in to a homebound program, where the teacher would come to you. Maybe having her come during your better hours would be good. This would certainly take some pressure off.

You could also see if you could stay in the homebound program next year too.

If you are a jr or sr, you could also think about getting a GED, which would mean you would be out of high school sooner. Is there a community college near you? You might be able to try taking one or two courses there before looking at other colleges.

You sound like you have thought this through and school is stressful. It also sounds like the school you are attending is not conducive to your needs now. I think you are doing the right thing by talking to your dr about it as well. I know you can make it- one way or another.

hang in there.

Pain free days

Hello, Jonathan. I have found that quitting school would be the worst thing to do in a situation like you're in because I'm in the same situation instead i'm 13 and the work load is tons. I go to school half days because I can't last a full day and I know exactly how you feel. Every day that goes on i feel tireder and more irritable. i can't wait until school's out in a week, litterally. I feel like i'm going to collapse from fatigue at the name of SCHOOL. Ugghhhh! What you should do, i can't persuade you into, but if you quit YOU WILL REGRET IT! If only there was a school program for people like us. I have considered the earplug thing too and agree about the whole 'not wanting to explain a million times' thing. there are too many rude people in my class alone that would criticise me to my face about such, so I just try to go aroung anything humiliating altogether. What i do is eat lunch in the guidance office because of the noise thing, and when classes change, what to do other than plug my ears I can't say. my Neuro called the school and on Dr.s requests i have a 504 code, which gives me exceptions to what i can do. I'm aloud to have a water bottle, I'm aloud to visit the nurse ASAP when necessary, etc. maybe if you get one that would allow you to transition from class to class earlier than other's (so for noise reduction) and you could take a rest somewhere quiet before arriving 5 min.s late to your next class, personally though I think that's too complex! In your situation i would do a homeschool program or an online school course program at your own pace. Whether that's what you need or not IDK! But it sure could help to have my advice I hope. I try to zone out during a lot of classes like algebra every 5 min.s to rest my head and do some yoga breathing before coming back to the real world, but it's not going to get any better unless you just jump into school, take some advil (doesn't help me though), and catch up. I'm sorry we're all dealing with this horrible issue! If I were anyone other than me I'd change it in a heartbeat! But life sucks sometimes and we just have to follow god's rules for whatever is planned. Ther IS a reason for EVERYTHING!(believe it or not it's truth, and truth may hurt)

I have a 504 code and completely agree with you sailingm! You couldn't state my thoughts clearer!

Elaina,

I did get an IEP (same as 504 code) so I could have extra time to do work and go out of class whenever I wanted. I just can't complete the work. It is much different in high school cause of the credits. If I were still in grades 1-8 my school would pass me anyway but I am not so it sucks. I had to quit school and hope to do some summer credits online.

Okay I understand now, Jon. Doing the summer courses may get you caught up but if you can't do work then your out of luck i guess. i really do hope you get to an under control pain at least and I will pray for you.
