have some people written that they had hair loss with Topamax? my daughter has big chunks of hair coming out of her head and that is the last med we introduced. i'm not finding it as a side effect when i research the drug. topamax is definitely helping with mood and anxiety. she is at a pretty low dose - 45 mg which she was beem taking about 1.5 months.
My daughter is 17 and has had NDPH since January 2006.

Topomax can cause hair loss as well as Amitryptiline (Elavil). Some medications deplete vitamins and minerals. Elavil depletes Vit B-2 (Riboflavin) and Coenzyme Q-10. Both of these are essential for people with migraines. Try supplementing with Vit B-2 (you can find it at GNC stores)and there is also a supplement recommended by my daughter's neurologist, MigreLief which is B-2, magnesium, and Feverfew. www.migrelief.com Good Luck!!

hmm, I hadn't heard about hair loss with it. My daughter was on 300 mg daily and it never helped. Her side effects at that level were that she could hardly even say her name! They kept increasing the dosage hoping to "break" the headache... well it almost broke her! We weaned her off it slowly, and now she's not on any medication for the headache. She just sleeps when it gets really bad and tolerates it when it's at a 3-4...

The NIH website lists hair loss as one side effect of Topamax. I'm losing hair, but I blame it more on middle age and genetics than meds!! Obviously not the case with Olivia.

I have not had any significant hair loss from Topamax. I might shed a little more, but it is definitely not falling out in clumps. She is at a pretty low dose so I would ask the doctor about that one. Maybe they know of a supplement or something that will stop that. I don't think it is a common side effect and it sounds horrible especially for a girl. I hope you find something that will stop it. Mary

I was on topamax a one point and it did not make my hair fall out, (and didn't help my headaches). I am now on Inderal and I have noticed significant hair loss. I wouldn't mind so much if it was helping with my pain, but it's not. I've just started with Migrelief and I'm sure my nero will take me off Inderal when I see him on Monday since my headaches are as bad as ever. I suppose if I wasn't in pain I would care about the hair loss alot more , because at this point I don't think I would mind thin hair if I was pain free.

Hello, I do understand what you are feeling I am taking topomax also i have been taking it for over a year now. I am now taking 200mg a day, I have had sever migraines which i no longer have thanks to topomax, although i am now experiencing the side effect of hair loss in big chunks, and i have been researching online any thing i can do to prevent it and i cannot find anything i have found people that have taken themselves off of the drug but 6-9 months after off it they are still experiencing the side effect of it, the doctors do not tell you that is a side effect of the drug but it is there is a link of side effect http://epilepsy.emedtv.com/topamax/topamax-side- effects.html, my prayers will be with you and your daughter.
