MDJunction to me

cinderella"MDJunction to me is a life saver... when i first was diagnosed with Scheuermann's Disease i wrote a message to a page i found on google, hoping that they could help me.... you'd never know it but that weird feeling (you know that one where it feels like someone actually cares) came over me when i opened my email next day to find that someone on the other side of the world (at the American Medical Library)had read my message while i was sleeping, and there low and behold was the address to MDJunction.... well it is everything to me, i live it breathe it and love it!!!!! I have found many people who are struggling with similar issues banding together to help each other. It is the best place in the world, and i couldn't think of another place to go to meet so many lovely people....

thanks MDJunction

I am in so much pain! Please tell me some quick fix for tmj!! I have had it for years and years and it seems to come and go - but when it's here - look out! No painkiller will touch it and I cant seem to do anything to get it to relax. Any suggestions?

I don't know, I have never had TMJ. I am so sorry to hear things are going so badly for you though. After reading your diary entry it sounds like all your stress is trying to come out in your jaw. Is there any way you can let some of your stress and frustration out in exercising some other muscles really well (sort of spread the pain around)? That way maybe you could get some of it out of your system in muscles that painkillers will help. If it doesn't end up helping than at least you still got a good workout out of it. Make sure to stretch out really well before and after though. Then maybe soak in a nice hot bath. Other than that I really am not sure what to tell you. I wish I knew more about TMJ. I hope someone comes along that does. Best of luck, Mary

Dear Jenna, I haven't read the diary entry Mary references, but I have been treated (unsuccessfully) for TMJ but I do know many, many people benefit from the following -- have no idea what you've already tried:

*The trickiest part is finding a dentist really qualified to treat TMJ v. just sticking a splint in your mouth and wishing you luck. Be picky and ask a lot of questions. I've been led to believe that a hard splint on the bottom might be the preferred approach.

*I was also treated by an occupational therapist who specializes in the jaw. I'm at an academic health center, so depending on where you are, this type of provider might be rare. But I would look for an OT, PT or bodyworker who specializes in the head and neck. They can help with trigger point release and teach you self massage. I also have a whole bunch of exercises designed to relax certain muscles and strengthen others. I can try to send these to you if you'd like. I only have as hard copy.

*You might try a muscle relaxant. 5 mg of valium at bedtime might stop your night time grinding if you do that, which most TMJers do. I am a big fan of valium as my other posts attest.

*I have also found that over time the jaw and c-spine benefit from having my mid-back and hips open and flexible. I do Pilates for this. Yoga or Pilates might be beneficial in an everything-is-connected sort of way.

*I did "blow out" my right jaw and could not open my mouth more than a half inch for several weeks, so please know I know how hellish this can be. I really hate the phrase "soft foods!"

*Finally for quick and effective treatment, you might consider acupuncture esp with chinese massage (tui na). A few treatments might really quickly. They have with me for other muscle related pain.

Keep us posted! xntj
