MDJunction to me

liamacker"The part of my recovery plan that I would say made up 80% is MDJ. I suffered a lot prior to finding MDJ, felt alone and had no one to talk to who really understood me. In the Bipolar Group I found like minded individuals who I could relate to and who offered support to me when I needed it. As I recovered, I could then offer support to them which gave me a good feeling about myself. I have met some great people here who I would class as good friends and know I would still be in the slump I was in without them. Now I am stable, I know that MDJ plays an important part in keeping me that way. Thank you MDJ for being there for us all and making us no longer feel alone." (liamacker)

Since being diagnosed with narcolepsy w/ cataplexy, I've tried a variety of different medications all with difficult side effects. I've decided that I'd really prefer to try to manage my symptoms without medication (although I will take something for cataplexy if needed).

I've been off everything for about 2 weeks now and I'm looking for ideas that don't involve medication. My main concerns are EDS and difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep at night. (As you can probably see by the fact that I am posting this at 5am, my sleep schedule is all over the place and I can't seem to sleep through the night.) I tried going gluten free for a few weeks (managed to keep it up for almost a month) but felt more foggy/confused than usual and couldn't concentrate on anything for any length of time.

Is anyone else trying to manage without medication? What strategies do you use? Have you found anything that works well for you?

Hello,

I try to manage without medication as much as I can. I don't take anything for cataplexy as my specialist trialled me on fluoxetine, an SSRI, unsuccessfully. I suffer cataplexy most often through laughter. The fluoxetine made me so depressed during the short time I was on it that my friends and family couldn't believe the negative effect the medication was having on me. When I began suffering panic attacks I decided I'd rather a cataplexy attack any day, and ceased taking the medication. After that experience I am reluctant to try any other medication for cataplexy. What do you take for this?

To combat my overwhelming fatigue and sleep attacks, I take dexamphetamine when I absolutely need to stay awake and alert (at work, driving) and my specialist recommends scheduled naps, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. I find the naps help, but its not always practical to go for a sleep.

Good luck, let me know if you come up with anything!
