We are a group of graduate students working to become speech therapists. We are in the process of learning more about how to help individuals with speech/communication issues related to MG. Any perspectives/stories/input on how your own speech/communication has been affected and what you have found helpful would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

With MG my speech was the first think to go. It first became nasely then almost completly gone. Had to write everything down on paper just to communicate with people. Or use sign language with those I knew how to use sign lanugue....something I learned off the internet 5 yrs ago never thinking I would need it to do communicate to others.

There really was not much I could do to regain my speech once it was gone....I found after the third round of IVIG I was able to talk again but that would only last a few days. Then went through crisis which they administered 1000 mg of methylprednisolone for 5 days straight and on the 10th day I woke up (in IICU) almost as good as new...almost that took about 4 days to be back to normal meaning I was able to talk walk swallow walk use my arms chew and yes breath on my own without arespitory aid....

If you have any suggestions in we can use in the future it would be nice. I also found ice packs to the neck allowed you to talk for a bit but having the ice on the neck for to long is too much.

Hope this helps, and hope you guys come up with something that will help MG patients
