I have just started therapy a week ago they are working on shoulders back and legs. It makes me very tired and weak when I get home I have to go to bed.I think it might help to make me stronger.Blink

hope so. i regressed instead of progressing when i tried physical therapy, but you never know till you try.

Quilter: Regressed is a good word for me too. I tried several times to find a fitness program that worked for me. Inevetably I would have a period of sickness shortly after starting and it always felt like I was restarting from 2 steps back. I guess I stopped trying.

I hope it works better for you Houston.

MGHouston - what type of therapy / exercises are you doing, and for how long are you doing them at a time? Is the therapist experienced with MG patients? I've never done true physical therapy with a therapist, but I do exercise and I do believe that it has helped me tremendously (along with treatment). The thing to remember is that with MG, the muscles fatigue, so doing a longer workout will most likely be detrimental instead of beneficial.

I would suggest starting small and slow - walk for 5 minutes a day for 3 days a week, and very gradually increase what you do. Also remember that you've probably been sedentary for awhile, and so starting an exercise program is going to be hard even without considering the MG, just as it would be for anyone who has been sedentary. Anything that involves sustained use of the muscles (like yoga or pilates) is also going to be bad for the MG - more muscles stop working the longer you hold the position. Think short and small - for example, if you want to work your arms, grab a can of vegetables and use it as a free weight to do bicep curls and other exercises. do 8-10 reps (or however many you can do) and stop (or switch to exercising another muscle group). A few hours later, do another set.

It took me over a year, but following those guidelines I've been able to get in fairly good shape. (that, and with treatment - lots of Mestinon, prednisone, Imuran, and IVIg.) My neurologist and I joke about the fact that I'm in better shape than he is.

I suggest you go to the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America web site and download the manual for health care providers. Take the section regarding physical therapy to your next session and go over it with your therapist. One of the big mistakes we make is, when asked if we are "O.K." reply "yes" when we are actually probably too tired. There is a very fine line between beneficial exercise and overworking and regressing. Know your own body. It is better to quit a bit too early than too late.
