I have observed this association in 1989 and published methods to reduce these spreading infections. Unfortunately the cannula manufacturers did not bring in changes nor produced any alternative method. I was unable to prove my hypothesis because there is no other device or method to compare.

Winchester and Eastleigh Healthcare NHS Trust in UK took a bold step to eliminate bacteraemia by meticulous taking care of insertion and monitoring IV Cannula. Since they introduced this in November 2007 there have been no new cases of MRSA infections.

This figure covers all forms of MRSA, including bloodstream infections (also known as bacteraemia) and wound infections. This compares to 2007/08 when there was 11 reported bloodstream infections.
