18 Months ago I gave birth prematurely at 7 months along. When my son was 18 days old they informed me that my son had gotten a really bad infection that they thought it would maybe get better. By the next morning he had gotten alittle worse and 2 hours later we are rushing to the hospital after a phone call telling us to get there asap.. When we got there there was a privacy curtain around my sons isolette and they informed us we had at the best a 30%chance of him getting better. And the only chance we had was to put him on nitric oxide and a vibrating ventilator.. His oxygen satuations were only in the 40's they told us to prepare for the worst that eventually his heart would shut down at this rate and asked us if we wanted them to do all the extra extremes they could to get him going again.. luckily we didnt have to go thru that.. We asked for a pastor to come and pray with us and to give the last rites as to prepare him for the just in case.. This all happened on a saturday morning. He had contracted MRSA in his lungs from a ventilator tube and had gotten staph pnumonia from it. The next day he was a little better and by the next morning on monday we will still at the hospital they were kind enough to give us a room with a bed so that we didnt have to leave his side except to sleep he was feeling so much better that he could wake up for a few minutes and smile at us and his sats were up in the 80's.. The doctors would come over and tell us that it was a miracle that as bad off as he was someone was watching over him making sure he was okay and we had given him hope and the will to live... He was on about a month of antibiotics and also was moved to a private room.. After his antibiotics were done his lungs were still really weak that he had to be put on steriods to get him off the ventilator On his last day on the steriods They informed us they wanted to try to put him on the cpap to see if he could breathe on his own. So we tried and the very next day he was on just plain oxygen. We were so happy to be able to hold our baby without all the tubes and not worry if we bumped one that would or could harm our baby. With in a couple days he was moved out of the NICU and put into the stepdown nursery where we were able to offer him 1 bottle at first and then 2 and then 3 and so on. We had a few problems that did end us back up in isolation after a baby there had contracted the same thing and died from it.. We seen it all happen and I felt so bad watching that baby knowing that my baby was there in the same situation not too long before this. I learned then to keep to myself. I couldnt handle feeling bad for someone else and try to feel bad for myself, So after about 4 months we were able to bring our little guy home. Not so little really he was 7 lbs or so when we were able to bring him home. After fighting with the doctors to even bring him home. They didnt think we were capable to bring him home and care for him being on lasix and on potasium and sodium being that those are monitored drugs that could kill you if dispensed wrong. But all the nurses and respitory people all agreed we were doing all the work anyways so why not just let us bring him home. So we did... And with in a few months he was off the oxygen..He came home on .4 to .5 at the end of january and by July he was on room air most of the day and mostly on it at night while he slept and then in august he was off. Our xrays were not the greatest and still have some bad spots that are trying to be stubborn and still have set backs that on occasion give us some hassles..Just in Febuary we had a episode of some thing simuliar to RSV that put us in the picu for a few days. So here we are some what healthy and trying to enjoy life with a little guy who still has other health issues. Like CP and GI problems..I would love to hear from other people who had children with simuliar issues. Good bless ya all...
