Hi I'm new to the blog world here. I'm 26 years old, and I was diagnosed with severe migraines when I was about 11 years old. I have tried several medications. So far I haven't found anything to help at the onset of a really severe migraine, but I do take something called amitriptolene, as a preventitive. I only have to take it once every night, and I do know that it has really helped with how often I get a migraine. It doesn't help for severity or onset of pain, but it helps with the long run. I typically get a migraine once a day, but when I take the amitriptolene, it seems to have gone down to about 2-3 days a week, so I concider that a really GREAT improvement! Hope that helps. I know how hard migraines can be to live with! : )

Hi Dawn, thanks for sharing that with us. My daughter will be 18 in six weeks and she's been going through this since she was 14. She's also on amitryptiline 50 mg at night. It was the first med we found that helped. We tried to increase it, but it just made her really shaky...she couldn't even write legibly, so, back down to 50. Have you had any trouble with your hair thinning? We found out some info on amitryp. and this about 1.5 yrs ago. I'm glad you have had some noticable improvement, that's GREAT.

Hi Dawn,

I too am a migraine sufferer. It really sucks. I wake up with most of mine. All the dr keeps telling me is to buy a new pillow. I did try this and that didn't help. I have tried maxalt and relpax but I had a reaction to them. I have tried otc meds and they didn't help me either. Is the med you take simular to maxalt or relplax? With those my throut got really tight. It was horable. I currently take Anexia for the pain that really helps. Most of the time I only need to take 1 pill in the morning and then I will be good for the rest of the day. But on my bad days I need to take 2 or 3 through out the day. I wish that my dr would give me something stronger for the bad days. I am going to see the Nerologist for the first time on the 19th of Feb. I am going to talk to her about the numbing I get in my upper back. I had a MRI of this but unfortnalty when I had the MRI my back was not numb. The only thing they found was a bone spur in my neck and they said that that would not cause my migraines. They said that wouldnt cause numbing in my back either. I also just went in and talked to my Dr about a lump on my lower back. He said it's just fat.....I weigh 105 pounds... I don't think it is fat. I wish he would have done something more that just feel it. So I will talk to the Nerologist about this as well. Do you see a nerologist? What kind of tests do they do?

Take care, I hope you are able to find the help you need.

Lisa

I never heard of any of those meds except for the topamax. What are they? What do they do? Do you feel they help? Have you had any side affects from them? I have tried maxalt, relpax, Midrin, and currently Elavil. Maxalt and relpax made my throut feel like it was being choked. Midrin was horrable for me. It made my heart feel like it was pounding out of my chest and my veins in my hands were buldging out. This was not listed as a side affect tho. I felt like I was having a heart attack yikks!!!!! I only took 1 of those and never touched it again. The elavil Im not too sure about either. I have only been on it for 5 days. But in that time I have noticed that I have a increase in my headaches. They are now happening at night. I have been waking up with them 30min. to 1 hour later in pain. Before I would sleep from 9 or 10 oclock until 3 or 4am without waking up. Then I would awake sometimes with my migraines at that time. Now I am not getting enough sleep. I try too but it's been hard. I called my nero today to see if she can try me on something else. I guess I won't know until tommarrow. I hope it is the Elavil doing that and not something else.

I feel bad for you, to have a migraine every day!!! That is horrable. Do you get any relief? Does your meds take the pain level down at least? I know when mine get really bad I take anexia which is a narcotic. Sometimes tho when it gets really bad, they don't even help. Then I end up in the ER. I hate going there. I have no insurance yikks!!!!! It keeps putting me in debt. That don't help, it gives me stress! I try not to think about those bills tho. It's better to have them do something than me sit at home suffering. Which I do most of the time until I can't stand it any more.

Well take care and good luck to you too,

Lisa

Hi. I have had migraines since I was 10. I have tried every form of pain killer, Inderal as a preventative and various triptans (Imitrex, Midrin, Maxalt). In my case I have had relief from a medication called Amerge. It is also in the triptan family but for some reason I can tolerate it when I can't tolerate the others. It is pretty pricey (about $25.00 to $35.00) a pill but when I get a migraine it has gotten rid of it 99% of the time. It probably would not be great for very frequent migraines (just for the price alone) but for 2-3 times a month it is better than an E.R visit. I have adjusted my sleep schedule also which involves rising at the same time every day (weekends too) and have been on a migraine diet for the last six months and I have to say the frequency has lessened.
