Migraines run in our family, I have had them myself for so many years, now my son is having them really bad, so I finally asked our dr to let him try TOPOMAX my mom takes it and my cousin takes it both of them with good results,

My son has been on topomax now for a month and it has really helped him a lot!

I will be asking for a script for topomax at my next appt since it has helped everyone I know.

I have not seen topomax mentioned so I thought I would.

I have tried just about everything else to no avail so what can it hurt?

My neurologist years ago had me on nortriptyline and said it was very good for migraines and honestly it did NOTHING to help mine it just made me FAT!

Just wanted to share the news about topomax for others!

Hugs

MsDoxy, I don't think I've seen you here so welcome to our group.

Actually there has been mention of Topomax here, if you want to see what was said put the work in the search at the top rt. of page and you should get the groups with posts on it. Good to see you here.

Kardie

I'm not a Dr. and anything I write is my oppinion and my opinion only. I am just like you, I'm here for support and friendship from people who understand what I'm dealing with.

I've been on it before and just recently gotten back on it. It works pretty well for me. Down to less than one migraine per month!!! That is an awesome feat.
My best day is worse than the worst day you have ever imagined.

Topomax is helpful. It's too bad it is so expensive though. Makes it hard for many people to benefit if they can't afford to buy it. Sad There is a generic but it seems that it is pretty pricey too.

Congrats on finding something that helps you! And welcome to the group. Smile

The only bad side effects I've experienced from Topomax, and I've been on it for about 5 years, are problems with word selection and sometimes I have issues concentrating/remembering things. We call it "stupamax." Still on it, though, because all the other preventatives I've tried didn't work...and I tried everything I could.

I have heard of it being referred to that way as well (stupamax). However, I have those problems anyhow from my diseases so I really couldn't tell if the problems were from the Topomax or just me being me. Laughing

I am hoping to be able to find a new doctor soon. My husband is finally working and the company he works for offers free health insurance (!!). It's the only good thing about the job since it's only very part time and not enough to help much with the bills. But I'm going to take advantage of it and see if maybe I can try Topomax again. First though, I may see if refilling my supplements helps. I've run out of nearly everything which is probably why my health is suffering so badly. If the supplements don't help I will ask for this or the other one that's new--I think it's Treximet that seemed to help me. Either way, I am ready to get a new doctor. I'm sick of being sick!

I was on Topomax several years ago and it helped the migraines but I had the "stupormax" big time. I couldn't think of common words, I'd have to play charades with people all the time trying to have a conversation. Very frustrating! If I remember correctly the higher the dosage the worse this gets and they had to raise dosage couple of times cause you get immune to it. Anyway, just keep an eye on memory. My memory sucks now, it seems like it has gone down hill for last several years. Whether it's due to medicine or medical conditions.
The only medical knowledge I have is my own experiences. Bretta
