I have daily headaches that are usually dull and get worse as the day goes on. I treat these with Ibuprofen. My next level I call Bad Headaches. The symptoms are very bad pain, nausea, sensitivity to light, sound, etc. It hurts to think or to even cook dinner. I usually take Darvocet and try to lay down. The next level is what I call a Migraine. The pain is unbearable, so bad I sometimes cry. I am so nauseous and dizzy that I actually vomit a lot. Light and sound sensitivity is extreme. I have to go to the dr. and get 2 shots, one for pain and one for nausea. If I don't, I will get dehydrated from not being able to drink. So, do you think that what I call Bad Headaches are truly Migraines, and what I call Migraines are really Bad Migraines? Thanks.

Yes, it sounds like the Bad Headaches are probably migraines. And Migraines are probably really bad migraines! If you are having these on a regular basis, and having to take that much medication to get rid of them, I'd recommend you consider talking to your PCP and seeing about getting a referral to a neurologist who can run some tests on you and then get you on a preventive medication (there are several different classes, anti-seizure drugs like Topamax, beta-blockers like Atentolol, etc) and also getting something to break the cycle when you do get one. Sometimes, you will get two medicines, one for the migraine, like Imitrex, Maxalt, Relpax, etc, and one for the nausea associated with it.

The neurologist may want to run an MRI to rule out anything serious as to the cause of the migraine, but most migraines are idiopathic, meaning there is no cause for them. Some, however, are caused by tension and stress. There are many different ways you can deal with them. Stay tuned for some natural info from me--deadlines looming, about 2 days left! LOL Wink

Good luck on dealing with this, and hopefully this will help you some. Let us know how it goes!

*hugs*

I agree with Sagespirit, the NSAID's tend to not work really well, whether it's Ibuprofen, Naproxen, or what have you... My migraines come so frequently that preventive meds are absolutely necessary, or I'm totally bedridden, and I'd be there for life! It depends on the severity and frequency of yours as to whether or not you and your neurologist will decide if you need to be on a daily preventive.

If not, as Sagespirit says, you will probably learn to recognize the symptoms of a migraine coming on, and you can take the medication that breaks the cycle right away. Wait to see, and you'll be headed for trouble!

I, too, have had times where I've gotten sick repeatedly from a migraine. I have slept on the bathroom floor or right in front of the A/C unit! Imitrex worked well for me for a while, then I found it didn't, but the same thing happened with several different meds. Don't be surprised if you have to go through several different types of medications, or several different dosages to see what works. Don't give up, and don't panic if you start having problems.

I am currently on Topamax at 100 mg twice a day. At first, I suffered from some side effects. They subsided after a month or two. With Topamax, you have to increase gradually. I'm very sensitive to meds, so I went up very, very slowly. It depends on how sensitive you are to meds as to how slowly you will have to take it. If you have a reaction to any medication, talk to your doctor and decide if it's worth continuing. Don't just push through it. If you do get on a preventive, see what works. I've tried several, and so far, Topamax has been the most effective, though I am thinking it's time to increase, as I am having many break-through migraines, up to 5 a week again... Sad

*hugs* Be well, and don't give up!

Thanks for the advice. I was diagnosed 13 years ago with migraines, I was just wondering how many very bad migraines you all get. When you say 5 a week, are they that bad that you are bedridden or do your meds help? I tried a neurologist 10 years ago. He tried so many different meds that the side effects were worse.

I have learned how to function through them. I have many other painful conditions--Lyme, FMS, CFS, IBS, GERD, TMJ (geez, the abbreviations! LOL), so I've learned how to deal with pain in my lifetime, to be honest with you, and I often push through it. Pain meds rarely work for me, but I also tend to wake up at a level 3-4 out of 10 on the pain scale, so it's kinda hard to say. When I get 5 a week, I don't necessarily get where they are soooooo bad that I'm bedridden, cuz I tolerate a LOT of pain, and I have been known to work through it... That's such a bad thing, tho, and I DON'T recommend it. I use a lot of natural healing methods, too, like aromatherapy, migraine patches, trigger point therapy, and some herbal remedies. But I have been bedridden before, don't get me wrong!

The interrupters, they don't seem to work. This week, I ended up taking Vicodin 3 days in a row. But I also found out that I had bought some new chips and they had MSG in them, so NO MORE for me!! I am cutting them out of my diet. I'm VERY sensitive to MSG, and many people with migraines are. If you don't know what foods trigger you, you can check out the American Migraine Association's website--they have a partial list available of food triggers for people who aren't members. Or you can ask your doctor, he should be able to provide you a list--the neurologist should, anyway.

If you have asthma, there's a class of drugs you definitely shouldn't take, so be aware of that. Just ask, and they can tell you--it's whatever class of drugs Propranolol is in. I couldn't take it, totally made my asthma worse, and the pharmacist told me about it, thank heavens!!

But Topamax has helped the most for me, I'm gonna have to ask to have it increased, tho, I think. My migraines are idiopathic--no reason for them. I've had them since I was 8 years old, and at the time, my neurologist didn't even treat kids, he saw me as a favor to my pediatrician who was a friend of his. And he pretty much said I sounded like a migraine patient, so he treated me as best he could--he was a lifesaver, too!

Good luck to you. If you want to talk more, or need any help with any of this, feel free to keep the convo going, or PM me. I'm gonna post some natural/alternative treatments for migraines that have helped me when I get some time. Maybe some of those will help you? I was hoping to have some time by now, but I've been sooooooo busy--much busier than I thought I would be! LOL

*hugs*

I hear ya--you should join us over on the CFS site--don't think I've seen you there, but now I remember you from the FMS site! Smile
