I am a 38 year old male who has been diagnosed with Bipolar II but have also struggled with addiction since the age of 26. I am in the recovery phase right now and have spent 3 years of the last 4 1/2 years in Rehabilitation. I recently began using meth during my last manic episode and have been blown away by the effects of this drug. It has really done some damage. I have used cocaine since I was 17, mostly recreational then..but after my divorce in 2001..things really went down hill. I am finally on medication which is helping tremendously but the urges come strong when I'm really feeling good or really depressed. I've been strong so far, but sometimes I wonder if i really have a fighting chance anymore. Inpatient programs are no longer an option..its all about relapse prevention. It's hard to change my life tho. I love to dance, clubs, etc...some difficult choices ahead

Tempest74, Hi.

I wonder what kind of medication you take...? That is something I am not familiar with.

And I also wonder if you attend any NA meetings...A sponsor is someone who can really help you interpret those decisions, and you will receive tools that you can use when the urges hit.

I AM, however still learning, and always will be.

Hello All,

I am new to this group but not to the site. I am a 37 stay at home mom and wife and I have Major Depression and was given Ritalin 3yrs. ago to help with my fatigue due to my Major Depression and I quickly became addicted to it for a good 3yrs. and then I was hospitalized for my major depression and they found out about my addiction but they never addressed it and once I left I got a new psych. and went right back to Ritalin and they quickly realized that I had an addict to ritalin so then they put me on Provigil which I have now become incredibly addicted to because it acts alot like Ritalin and other stimulants. I have never gotten help for my drug addiction so I don't even know where to start for help.

JennyLynn, Welcome!

How are you?

The first thing that I would do, if it were me...is to tell the prescribing doctor that I want to try to get off of them. Let them know that you are aware, or feel that you may be addicted.

The doctor WON'T MIND that you are being honest about this. They are here to take care of you, not to hurt you (I say that loosely because I'm aware that there ARE some that are corrupt)

I recently had a similar situation, and my husband finally, after a year noticed that he was addicted to vicodin. So we mentioned it to his Dr.

And if you feel like your doc won't help, get a second opinion. That is your RIGHT as a patient.

Maybe then, if you want to deal with the emotional stuff of addiction, get yourself into a group. Me and my husband are members of Narcotics Anonymous, and here is a link to help you locate a group near you.
