from what I understand, diuretics are only supposed to cause 5-7 pounds of fluid loss in the body, so weight loss beyond that is another charming factor of this crazy disease or another health complication. For me the weight loss was a perk, and I also have circulation problems that before the diuretics caused bloating and swelling in my hands and feet so that is gone and my shoe size went down a whole size!

autumn and all

when i had the test at the dr's where they induce the vertigo by pouring water in your ear (it is awful!) they bring you out of it by looking up at the light in the goggles. so maybe when you are in an attack, try focusing on something . keep looking at it, see if that helps...

good luck

Hi,

Meclizine and valium are very helpful and I have been on them for a few months. See your doctor (neuro otologists) and have them tell you which treatment to follow. This is a tough disease however, this disease does go into remission for which I was for 5.50 years but is back now. I wish you well, peace and MD-free days!

Hi dizzymuffin,

I've had this disease a long time and was diagnosed finally with it about 6 years ago. I believe my first attack of severe vertigo happened in my late 30's. I'm 60 now.

It is a chronic condition but you can possibly be one of those people who has large spans of time between spells. Diuretics( also called water pills) help to keep the fluid levels within the body low --with the idea this will help lower the fluid levels in the endolymph system of the inner ear. They can cause some water weight loss and you need to continue to drink 8-10 glasses of water a day. Some of them also work in a way that make you lose electrolytes and your doctor would have recommended follow up blood tests because of that. I see your doctor also recommended a salt restricted diet? Mine has and that is where I have some of my greatest trouble. I love salt!! I hate to think of increasing the water pill because I can't cut down on the salt. So the struggle continues.

I am always researching. Some folks have trouble taking any medicines or have bad reactions to them. Many folks have weight loss because of the dizziness and vomiting. It is hard to maintain weight when it is hard to eat or to keep food down. I've seen several recommendations on this site about that too. Please just try to eat a healthy balanced diet when you can.

Having others out there who have some of the same problems and who share them has given me the best support so far. I hope this helps you too!

Hi,

One way I have found to be able to eat is to take a sedative (Xanax, Valium, Ativan) whichever you're taking and it will help with the nausea. I only weigh 90 lbs and lost 21 lbs during my illness.

I don't know if this will help you but it worth a try.
