I was not given any instructions or even the name of the test. I'll try to search the web to see what it is. It's done by the Outpatient Neurology.

The PA did say something about an ENG so that's what I searched. Nothing is said that I won't be able to drive afterwards.

Those that have had this test, did it effect your ability to drive home from the test, or for a period more-so after that?

I need to know if I need a designated driver. My husband does not drive so I am trying to find out if I need to plan a ride home.

Hi Tamie,

If it's an ENG I just had that test done and it is a good idea to have someone drive you. The test is approximately 45 to 1 hour long. It's not too bad however there's one part that's a bit uncomfortable in which they blow hot/cold air into the ear (caloric testing). Call DR's office and find out if they recommend that someone accompanies you.

I've looked it up since posting. I have a LONG history of frequent ruptured ear drums. I wonder if they'll still do it.

I'm a bit scared. I'm afraid of how sick I'll end up and how much time it will take to feel better.

Is it worth it to find out Meniere's for a diagnosis?

I believe it will be worth it to have the test. I had it and was not told that I would need a designated driver but then I didn't have a diagnosis of Meniere's until the test results came back. I also had a history of ear infections and ear drum history. The ENG did make me dizzy but that went away in a short period of time. I don't recall the caloric test being uncomfortable at all. I recommend having a driver if you think you will need one. Better to be safe. Let us know when you have the results. Good Luck.

Hi MonkeyGrandma,

MonkeyGrandma you are right on the money. The caloric test makes one dizzy and a bit nauseous, but it goes away quickly. It's a very good idea to have it, so Tamie don't be scared b/c compared to a Vertigo attack, it's walk in the park.

All my best.

My attacks have become more and more frequent.

I got a call today. They changed the time of my appointment but the call gave me a chance to ask about a designated driver. It's recommended but not required. Still no other instructions.

I'm an Advocate

indirect vestibular function test...

they investigate vestibular function test...indirectly... by looking at vestibulo-ocular vor and vestbulo- spinal reflex vsr...

your vestibular system allows you to keep balance... stand upright...etc...

these test dont diagnose menieres per say...but will give the doctor needed info...an ENG is just one of these types of test...
