ok so i have been smoking weed for over 5 years now. for the last 3, it has been alomost everyday. im 21 now and am enrolled in a university and i feel like im kinda burnt out of the whole thing. i really do want to quit, because for those 3-4 days i dont smoke, i feel really good about myself and feel in control.

Yet it has been over a year and half since i bought any bud. Now you're wondering how can that be? and here is my predicament, my parents smoke.

yea thats right. my mom and pops are joint smoking, bong hitting hippies. they both have normal career thriving jobs and actually have good credit. then whats the big deal? ever since i can remember they have done this. I even remember asking them to quit once i knew what it was. They told me they would but to no avail. so if you cant beat them join them right? i wish i never would have. because now anytime i need to smoke weed, i just go to dad. i also have a younger sister who is 17 and she is a big stoner. i still live at home and cannot afford to move out and get my own place until i graduate from **insert universty name here** which should be in the next 1-2 yrs.

i just would like to know if anyone has any advice for me to remain sober living in a house full of pot heads?

thank you

I had a similar situation to yours. Unfortunately, I wasnt able to bring myself to quit until i moved out of my parents. Thats the problem with pot being such a lifwestyle addiction. If you can make your self go two weeks without it, you will be amazed how much easier it is after that.

yea i know i need to get out. i think that sometimes i used thats as a crutch to smoke. ya know, "oh im so miserable being 21 yrs old and still living at home,"

but i dont have the means and besides, theyre paying for my school. im going to come out with a 4 yr degree and be completely debt free (well that might change if i dont pay my cell phone bill.)haha

thanks for the feedback

Hi carebear, Your in a very tough situation! Having school payed for and living in the middle of addiction in the family. You CAN take control of your life and not smoke. You don't have to be like them! Find the strength to say NO!

Alot of people grow up in addicted families and don't use themselves. They have parents that drink, or use drugs, and decide for themselves that they don't want to live like that.

Find friends that don't use and hang out with them. Stay away from your family when they are using, as much as possible. Keep yourself involved with school and getting your degree. Do whatever you have to not to use. Find a supportive group of people close to you.... so they can help you when times get tough. Post here as often as you need to.... so we can also be supportive to you and your efforts to get clean!

Best of luck to you! I hope that school is going good! If you need anything, please let me know.

Your friend,chris

thanks so much.

i just wish the other people in my family realized how serious this situation is. but i guess it become such a normal thing in the house that no one sees that addiction has a grip on all of us. i want to sit down with everyone and actually have a discussin about it, but with my younger sister being 17, shes got that metality about her that she can do whatever she wants. my parents both said they are willing to stop, but its so frustrating that my sister is so self centered that she doesnt care about anyone elses well being but her own. i dont know. i think that my parents should discuss this with her.

yea school is good, i got an A on my test i took yesterday! GO ME!!

thanks chris!

Congratulations on getting an "A"! You go Girl!!!

I know that you want to help everyone in the family..... and it would be nice if they would all agree to stop....but chances are..... they won't!

Very frustrating for you. You can't drag them into recovery with you......if you did stop and show how much different life is when not using, then they could see for themselves that life without marijuana is good!....They would see you getting healthy and happy with your life......and may want it for themselves!

Your sister is so young to be into all of this already....would your parents be willing to put her into a treatment program?.....She will have it rough as an adult if she doesn't get help soon!

Self-centered is part of the addiction. It is sad when people act like that. It may also be her age....my daughter is 19 and very self-centered. They will push everyone away and learn to change their behavior.....I HOPE THEY CAHNGE SOON!

CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN!!! KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK! Your friend,Chris

Carebear do you have time to go to meetings? I haven't been to an NA meeting for a while. But AA meetings and NA meetings alike have the same principles, traditions and step program. Even if you still smoke you can try to go to a meeting by yourself don't be shy. I go alone all the time. I'm 21. If you live in a big city they even have Young peoples Meetings.
