 Truth be told, I've never heard of this disease until I read about it here.

And I have a question. Does anybody know why exactly is it called Lyme, out of all the other names it could have gotten?

My wife said it's maybe because the sufferers become so pale from the illness, but I really don't think this is it.

 It is because the cause of the illness (i.e., borrelia burgdorferi: a spicochete shaped bacteria trasmitted mainly by ticks) was first identified when a group of children in the Lyme, Connecticut area were mysteriously coming down with what the doctors originally thought to be a form of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

 I believe it's called lyme because the first case was reported in Lyme Conneticut. There's some interesting reading on that, a conspiracy theory if you will, here is a link http://www.poisonplum.com/index.html

 Thhat is correct, Lyme Connecticut, therefore the name. In Sweden we simply call it Borelia after the bacteria that causes it
