Symptoms include fatigue, night sweats, chills, fever, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, headache, dark urine, muscle pain, joint pain, nausea, and jaundice. Treatment is an anti-malarial combined with an antibiotic--often Mepron or Malarone with Zithromax or Biaxin.

Symptom list from Dr. Burrascano from LDA site 9.05

http://www.lymediseaseassociation.org./SymptomList.doc

“CHILDREN’S” LYME SYMPTOMS compiled by Geneal 6-07

From “GENEAL” June 2007

I have been doing some research regarding Lyme and signs/symptoms in small children.

I know many of you have small children that you may be concerned about.

I believe my youngest child (4yrs old) may have gotten this disease from me.

For All Children

-dizziness

-neck pain and stiffness in almost 90%

-sore throats

-swollen lymph nodes

-excessive thirst,

-Chest pains in at least 70%, some have palpatations

-Sense of air hunger or shortness of breath, dry cough

-abdominal pain in about 50%, can mimic acute appendicitis

-sometimes vomiting, heartburn

-rashes that come and go, malar rashes, new psoriasis

-migratory arthralgias, joing pain in 50% to 100%

-myalgias in over 80%, back ache, morning stiffness, pain at rest, muscle weakness

-frequent illnessses, dark circles under their eyes

-intermittent red, hot pinnae of ears

-sleep disturbance in over 80%

-Neurological symptoms are protean and can appear AT ANY TIME during the course of infection

*hypersensitivity of skin, scalp and hair

*Hypersensitivity to noise, light, smell

*Alterations of taste

*poor balance and coordination

*Uncharacteristic behavior outbursts, mood disturbances, depression

*social withdrawal

*New onset phobias

*Oppositional behaviors

*Obsessive compulsive disorders

*Deterioration in school performance in over 90%

*Difficulty with concentration and attention in school with easily distractability as well as "brain fog" in over 80%

*New onset of ADD

*When measured with formal neuro-psychiatric testing, children demonstrate defects in auditory and visual sequential processing

Less Commonly:

*Movement disorders-spaticity, ataxia, motor or vocal tics

*Cranial neuropathies, e.g. Bell's Palsy or optic nerve neuritis

*Peripheral neuropathies-numbness and tingling, distal parathesias, subtle weakness

Pre-Schoolers and toddlers

- Mood swings, sudden emotional outbursts

- Irritability

- Personality changes

- Regression of motor and social skills (developmental milestones)

- Changes in play behavior, tire easily, less active

- Trouble falling asleep, frequent awakenings

- Nightmares, new phobias, recurrence of separation anxiety

- Diaper rash unresponsive to normal treatment

- Frequent URI's, ear and throat infections, bronchitis, pneumonia

Congenital Lyme Disease

* Infants can be infected with Borrelia transpacentally in any stage of pregnancy and/or via mother's breast milk.

* The co-infections: Babesia, Bartonella, Mycoplasma and perhaps even the Ehrilichias can be transmitted transpacentally to the developing fetus.

* Gestational Borreliosis can be associated with repeated miscarriages, fetal death in utero, still births, hydrocephalus, cardiovascual anomalies,

intrauterine growth retardation, neonatal respiratory distress, and maternal toxemia of pregnancy.

* Infants either infected congenitally or from breast milk can have

- Floppiness with poor muscle tone

- Irritability

- Frequent fevers and illness early in life

- Joint sensitivities and body pain

- Skin sensitivity

- Gastro esophageal reflux

- Developmental delays

-Learning disabilities and psychiatric problems

Infants infected congenitally can have

-Small windpipes (tracheomalacia)

- Eye problems (cataracts)

- Heart defects

* Infants bitten very early in life will have many of the same symptoms

- loss and decline in developmental milestones.

I found this to be a pretty inclusive list of signs/symptoms for small children, infants, and those suspected of congenital Lyme.

Sadly, my two children do exhibit many of these symptoms and both have positive bands for Lyme via Igenex diagnostic lab in PALO ALTO, CALIFORNIA. Geneal, 2007

If you are showing symptoms of co-infections, I would like to suggest being tested for co-infections when you have LYME western blots done. It isn’t cheap!! But if you are positive, you can treat the co-infections first, and then work on LYME symptoms.

I wanted to reply to this post as it is very very informative for newbies and also I wanted to put it back at the top of the forums again.

I want to ask a question, I had the big full panel for Lyme and the co-infections, the whole thing, and also one of my boys had the full co-infection panel in addition to the lyme panel that all 6 of us got,

it said I was negative for co-infections, but over time, I am wondering, can you have a negative test result for these?

The main sx I am concerned about are air hunger, headaches,

I have been on abx since 4/09 and am feeling alot better but still, I wonder, how could I have NO co-infections?

Has anyone heard of doing additional testing or a trial run of melpron, for ex?

I have not had fever, night sweats, or stomach issues.... thanks guys!

I'm on penicillin... is that wrong... since that wasnt in your list? I have been on it for a week and feel absolutely no improvement and even more tired, confused, spacey, exhausted, more hair loss, etc. And I lost 30 pounds and then quickly gained it back with a tiny topical daily dose of estroiel (sp) and testosterone .03% on both. What is the interaction of thyroid, estrogen, testosterone, weight, and Lyme? Big question! Thanks!

Betty’s suggested posting guidelines:

Many of members have neuro lyme, and it is hard to read long solid block text and be able to comprehend; example, me, 40 yrs. neuro chronic lyme, so we are able to comprehend and read. Then we can assist and guide you ok.

please post in short paragraphs like you see below or look at a few other posts, but we neuro folks need them short.

1-2 sentences MAX and hit ENTER TWICE to doublespace between each paragraph. hugs DO NOT BREAK UP THE SENTENCE THOUGH…we neuros lose our train of thought if it is broken up in the middle unless it goes on FOREVER!

For easier reading, please edit your post. You can break up your longer paragraphs into smaller paragraphs. Please hit “enter” key twice after each paragraph, also.

Go to left hand corner; mark box to receive all replies and click edit send.

Thank you for posting in a manner that makes it easier for all to read and help others.

People who use the drug QUALAQUIN to treat or prevent nighttime leg cramps may be at risk for serious and life-threatening reactions, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Qualaquin (quinine sulfate) is FDA-approved only to treat a certain type of malaria (uncomplicated malaria) caused by the parasite Plasmodium falciparum.

This infection, which is rare in the United States, is found mainly in travelers who have been to countries where malaria occurs.

However, most of Qualaquin’s use in the U.S. is for the treatment or prevention of nighttime leg cramps—a use not approved by FDA.

FDA has received reports of side effects after people used Qualaquin to prevent or treat leg cramps or restless leg syndrome.

Side effects included serious and life-threatening reactions in 38 reports.

Of these 38 reports, there were 24 blood-related reactions, including a severe lowering of platelets in the blood.

Some of the blood-related side effects resulted in permanent kidney damage, hospitalization, and two deaths.

Advice for Consumers

If you take Qualaquin for nighttime leg cramps, you should discuss other treatment options with your health care professional.

Contact your health care professional immediately if you experience easy bruising, severe nose bleeding, blood in your urine or stool, bleeding gums, or the appearance of unusual purple, brown, or red spots on your skin.

Read the medication guide given to you at the pharmacy when you pick up a prescription for Qualaquin.

Report any side effects with the use of Qualaquin to FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting Program4 either online, by regular mail, by fax, or by phone.

FDA Action

As part of a risk management plan, FDA requires that patients receive a medication guide at the pharmacy when they pick up a prescription for Qualaquin.

The medication guide explains what the drug is and is not approved for, as well as its potential side effects.

I agree, lots to see here! Was looking for something we were talkin' about some time ago..

We were talking about the ankle and wrist symptom.. It kinda falls under Bab's and could also be Bart...

Do you remember where we found this info?

For those who are little new to this, we were talkin' about how we get a "disconnected" feelin' in our wrists and ankles...

Hard to explain..but it comes and you feel like you sprained it..or if you used it..you could sprain it..

After a couple of days..sometimes hours..it goes away.

Anybody..here explain it better..or get this too?
