A peripherally inserted central catheter- (PICC or PIC line) is a form of intravenous access that can be used for a prolonged period of time, e.g. for long chemotherapy regimens, extended antibiotic therapy or total parenteral nutrition. First described in 1975[1] it is an alternative to subclavian lines, internal jugular lines or femoral lines which have higher rates of infection. Subclavian and internal jugular line placements may result in pneumothorax (punctured lung).

A PICC is inserted in a peripheral vein, such as the cephalic vein, basilic vein, or brachial vein and then advanced through increasingly larger veins, toward the heart until the tip rests in the distal superior vena cava or cavo-atrial junction.

PICCs are usually inserted by radiologists, physician assistants, radiologist assistants, or certified registered nurses using ultrasound, chest radiographs and fluoroscopy to aid in their insertion and to confirm placement. Complications may include catheter occlusion, phlebitis, hemorrhage, thrombosis and infection. Urokinase may be used to lyse obstructions. PICC lines generally will remain in place no longer than 30 days, although duration of use varies from just a few days in patients requiring short courses of chemotherapy or biotherapy to a year for patients requiring longer treatment. Commonly, other forms of intravenous access are considered if the treatment course is protracted. While replacement is generally considered a year post-insertion, patients have survived with the same PICC in situ for several years without complication.

Certain types of PICCs have recently been approved by the FDA for use in power injection. These PICCs, often referred to as "POWER PICCs", are designed to withstand the high pressures associated with radiocontrast studies.

Hope this helped! Have a good day!

Hi,

Yes, I had 6 PICC lines in 6 months.

Finally I had them put a Port-A-Catheter in my chest so they could keep access their.

That might be a better choice.

Brenda

I had a picc line in for 9 months and that is rare; they usually don't like to leave them in for more than 8 months but we were hoping that I would be done soon. Then the one day I woke up and my neck was killing me on the left side, it felt like I had pulled a muscle. That went on for a few days and then I started having a horrible migraine that wouldn't go away. Finally, when I was pushing my saline the one night I could literally feel the line hitting againt my vein wall in my neck. The next day I went to the hospital and they realized that the line got sucked up into my jugular and formed blood clots around it. So I had to have it removed and then was on coumadin for 6 months. So what happened was there is a branch junction about 2 inches above the heart and sometimes the line gets pulled up with the flow of blood. I was told this happens about 30% of the time. I would think that the same thing probably happened to you, but it didnt get pulled into a negative position. It is still in the same vein just not flushing directly into the heart like it is supposed to. Hope this helps a little.

Interesting and sorry to hear that you had such a tramatic experience.

I think we are talking about the line breaking at two different locations. My Picc broke at the entry point, not internally. So all 40 Centimeters were floating around in my body. It could have possibly been fatal if it wasn't removed stat as it was poking through my heart. Also interesting to hear... you were told the breakage rate is nearly 30%! That is troubeling to hear. I have been told it is very rare to have a PICC Break. It's scary. Best of luck to you and hope you are doing well.

No I was told that it being pulled up in the neck or out of the heart happens like 30% of the time.

Oh, OK, SOrry I mis-understood I guess.

Still kind of a high number though. Especially since I am on my 3RD PICC.

I'd sure rather pull it out than have it enter and not attached to anything! LOL

Best wish's for good health.

Hi Julie, Thanks for asking, Actually I think I feel worse than I have in a long time. Now experiencing sharp pain in the chest. Many people are opposed to the PICC line, I agreed to it again for the fact of being so ill and the other forms of treatment not of help. I t seemed to be my only option to a have any quality of life.

I have bad days, and tell myself there are good. I can enjoy days but then seem to pay the price afterwards.

Gee... I don't mean to sound like I am complaining... I know I have it better than many and there is someone who always has it much worse.

I try to stay positve and keep the faith, although some day's it is harder than others.

Have a restful night!
