Cat’s Claw Uses & Scientific Evidence

Historical or traditional use (may or may not be supported by scientific studies)

Cat’s claw has been reportedly used by indigenous peoples in the Andes to treat inflammation, rheumatism, gastric ulcers, tumors, dysentery, and as birth control.1 Cat’s claw is popular in South American folk medicine for treating intestinal complaints, gastric ulcers, arthritis, and to promote wound healing.

Active constituents

According to test tube studies, oxyindole alkaloids in cat’s claw stimulate immune function.2 Alkaloids and glycosides in cat’s claw have also demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity.3 4

Although clinical trials are lacking, cat’s claw has become very popular in North America and is sometimes recommended for people with cancer or HIV infection. A cigarette smoker who took a freeze-dried extract of cat’s claw root bark for one month showed a sharp decrease in one urinary cancer marker.5 This finding, however, does little to support the use of the herb in persons with cancer and points toward the need for actual clinical studies to determine its effectiveness.

Cat’s claw has been used traditionally for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. In a double-blind trial, 100 mg per day of a freeze-dried preparation of cat's claw taken for four weeks was significantly more effective than a placebo at relieving pain and improving the overall condition.6

Basically, they're still working on the studies as far as I can tell, but based on testimonials, I'd say it's working for many. My LLMD (ND) is also putting me on Samento.

WARNING: A plant called “cat’s claw” grows in northern Mexico and southern Texas. This plant, Acacia gregii, has no known health benefits and its bark may be poisonous.

This is not the Cat's Claw or Samento we are discussing here that is vine growing in Peru, but I thought it would be good to make note of this. Use caution when purchasing online... I want you safe!!

HOW DO WE KNOW IT WORKS?

We do not know if cat’s claw has any beneficial effects for people with HIV [or other diseases/conditions]. There have been several laboratory studies that show promising results. However, very few people have taken cat’s claw in careful scientific studies.

Other research showed that cat’s claw also contains different kinds of alkaloids that affect the central nervous system. These alkaloids might work against the alkaloids that affect the immune system. More research is needed.

In laboratory studies, cat’s claw normalizes some immune system functions. It also appears to help reduce blood clotting. We do not know if these laboratory results will carry over to studies in people.

Without controlled studies, we don't know if it does anything, good or bad.

Bottom Line: IMO, the "scientific" verdict is still out... it has neither been proven nor disproven at this point, although several studies do look promising in favor of it's use. Also IMO, the lack of controlled studies simply means there hasn't been enough done yet to prove or disprove, not that it does or does not work. I personally, feel strongly in favor of Samento because I feel that word of mouth testimonials by people I feel I can trust have seen great benefit by it's use... even my LLMD feels strongly in favor of it's benefits. So that's my person opinion.

HERE is a GREAT article on Samento!!

http://www.samento.com.ec/sciencelib/4sam/07Sampanacea.html

I encourage anyone interested to read it in it's entirety... you are still entitled to your own opinions, of course. I am just sharing, once again, my findings which for me personally, contribute to my own take on it all.

Tahnee, I never tried the regular Cats Claw maybe its just as effective, maybe some of those folks could post? I chose TOA free because the info looked really impressive and what that stuff has done is like a miracle to me.I think our personal experiences are extremely valuable to others,as good as scientific studies, i had no idea what was out there when my symptoms first started i thought devils claw was cats claw.My story in a nutshell in 4.5 mths i have a new life thank you Samento!

Yes, you are most right, there is a difference, and the one you use it the best as far as I can tell. I am not positive yet, but I believe that is what my LLMD is putting me on as soon as I get back from vaca. The TOA free kind. The stories/testimonials on it's effectiveness for many people are what have me leaning towards Samento, and I'm not talking about random testimonials, I'm talking you, Connie, Julie, and many others here. I am excited to see how I respond with it. Did you read that article I posted at the bottom? I really enjoyed it.

Oh, and I meant for my add-ons in the post-before-this-last to read as in that although there aren't enough scientific studies yet, that has no ill effect on my thoughts on Samento... I am definitely in favor of trying it. I am hoping it will work for me as well as it has worked for you and so many others here!

Oh yeah read it? I have so much stuff on Samento i almost turned into a bottle (kidding)But ya know what? This is a salt/c protocol post..there has been a lot posted on samento everywhere, I think for the new people wondering about different cat claws a post should be created for it..so much easier than searching the bar and jumping all over the place.. I made one up when i first joined but i called it "anyone against samento?" trying to learn more was looking for negative feedback.

Glad you are doing better on the other stuff with the Samento though... See? Testimonials!

Okay... moving on & back on-topic,... heehee! Salt/Vit C Protocol, my peeps!

OK everyone so what's the protocol?? I would love to try something like that! It can't hurt to take some extra vitimins in my opinion. How much salt/Vitimin C do you take? How long? I want to try.

I am working my way up to the suggested max that i have researched, the max i have read is 12 grams of c and 12 grams of salt per day . usually divided into separate doses ie : 3 of each 4 times per day.

Be sure that u are using a good ester c and a pure salt. i used a good salt that comes form the Himalayans, supposed to be one of the ones recommended for this protocol. u can pm me if u want the name and the source and i dont think i can post brand names here and contacts for products. DO NOT USE REGULAR TABLE SALT!

I am currently up to 9000 of the C per day and 6 grams of the salt but working up slowly each week. If u get diarrhea, which i have not yet, back off a little.

This is what i know, you can google salt C for lyme and get a few good links.

Good luck and by the way if you are doings salts and this protocol's dose, for goodness sake..water water water water water!

:o)
