is it true that injections are more efficient than oral medication? my niece was prescribed crystapen for an early case of lyme and she can't stand it. we're not even sure yet she does have lyme. she's terribly afraid of the injection and it totally messes her up. we asked the pediatrician if an oral medication wouldn't be better in her case, and he said it may not be as efficient. is that so?

This can be true in some cases as lyme can quickly disseminate to the CNS and embed into muscle/tissue. IV or injections can often work much more quickly and much better efficacy. Doxy is often the first line of defense in lyme cases however, it can yellow teeth in small children. Perhaps, why he went the injection route ?

I have done both and as everything else, it's really individualized. I personally hated oral antibiotics and prefered the IM injections. (and I have a real fear of needles - I have congential hypothroidism and was a pin cushion from infancy on) The stomach problems that came with oral antibioics, taking them with food 2 or 3 times a day, 2 or 3 at a time etc etc. It gets to be overwhelming. I actually felt MUCH better with IM injections than oral medications. I felt more like my old self than I did with orals. I almost felt - dare I say - cured! But after weaning off, I went downhill again. But absorption of orals is another thing to consider. We all absorb meds differently and my doc and I think I did so well on IM because it goes right into the muscle and into your bloodstream.

Is there any way they can make it less tramatic for her? Can they mix it with Lidocane or something so it's not as painful? I feel for her, I know what it's like to be young and scared and feel like a pin cushion. I'm sure the doctor has his reasons.

Best of luck, let us know how it goes.
