I do not get to this site very often but when I do I find everyone's conversation so vert interesting. I have been doing IVIG infusions (3 so far) to boost my immune system. I also have Lyme and we are hoping my immune sysytem will strengthen quicker to fight this Lyme. Has any one else had IVIG?

Evan (18) had a 6 mo trial about a yr ago--helped him--he has low IGG and IGM and we can never be sure if its because he is gestational Lyme ( I contracted while about 8 mo preg with him) or if he wouldve inherited this anyway or he developed this while the Lyme etc wreaked havoc all those yrs unknown.

Be aware its risky--it is a blood product and known for severe allergy reactions--even after doing it ok for awhile--and if they insist on also giving you steroids--think twice--the steroids can make Lyme worse!! For Evan we simply watched him very carefully-

it helpes to pretreat with Benadryl (IV was too strong and made brain fog worse), which will prevent some allergic reactions

we think he was helped but insurance refused another course and so far we cant find a Dr to Rx it again--which may be his best hope--they all say his levels are "low but not low enough" yet abnormally low--go figure--being deathly ill and bedbound for 3 yrs at his age isnt sick enough??

IvIg may not do anything about the Lyme sx OR it may just help your body fight better--hard to tell..for some its 2 different unrelated things..indeed theyre finding out that some with less aggressive immune systems actually do better--its the very weak immune systems and the very strong that cause the most problems for many ( the guess is that if your "army" fights too hard it will cause too much collateral damage and also more obviously if the army is lazy you wont fight it at all)

good luck

Finette

Thanks for the reply. I am going to a chiropracter today to start acupuncture and to discuss some of the supplements out there in addition to the antibiotics, Lyrica, cymbalta, wellbuterin and various vitamins I am taking. I also have FM. I had my PICC line taken out 1 1/2 weeks ago and my arm still has some nerve kinks going on. Is there anything specific you would ask of a chiropractor (acupuncture points). I am not sure about the whole detox issue. That scares me.

for accupuncture refer him to Dr Zhang--he is in NYC but will email/phone consult with anyone--he has excellent Lyme related accupuncture points!!!! he also has a website and book

http://www.sinomedresearch.org/

are you taking the cymbalta, lyrica and Wellbutrin all at once????? is that wise??? they all mess with brain chemsitry in overlapping ways and you may be at risk for seratonin syndrome--Id ask a good pharmacist and MD about them and see what the chiro says too

the FM may be a consequence of the Lyme--they claim over 80% of FM diagnoses are mistaken Lyme really.

Id avoid detox for now--my thoughts are that as you get stronger your body should be able to detox with supportive measures.

Hello! Yes I am taking all of the drugs you mentioned. I will ask the pharmacist. (both the internal med doc and my psychiatrist seemed to think it was OK). I have had much more energy the last 2 weeks. I found out yesterday that the "Lyme disease" antigens IGM and IGG are gone. (from doctor's report via voice message. My immune system values are normal now. We are going to continue the IVIG every other week for 3 more months and continue the Zithromax and Ceftin. I go back to the doctor in September. What does the bloodwork really tell me??????? Is the IVIG working to fight against the Lyme still? Am I considered Lyme free? I am not sure what to tell friends and family when they ask. Thanks!

Sheila

Sheila,

If you are feeling better, overall, then you should think about concentrating on the supportive medications...low dose antibiotics, light pain meds...and try to get off the antidepressants, unless you are still depressed and feel you need them. The Wellbutrin is the easiest on the body.

Talk to your docs and try to get on the least amount of meds possible, the least amount that allows you to continue to feel well.

You are not Lyme free, but you are under control. You can be susceptible to flare ups from time to time, but they should be temporary and go away after a few days to a few weeks.

Take care and be well.

Tom

IVIg is an experimental therapy (so what is new). I would be afraid to use it because of board scrutiny in my state. It makes sense that it would work. It attacks any circulating immune complexes. It is a non specific therapy. It has been reported to "cure" some cases of MS. It is certainly used in a wide variety of "autoimmune" disorders. The Cd3 immune compex test from Quest only may be useful. By the same token plasmapherisis should work. Hyperbaric oxygen may work? These are temporizing treatments. Long term antibiotics will still be needed. Kudos to your doc for trying this therapy!
I am a family doctor in Germantown Maryland. I have been treating Lyme for several years and have treated between 500 and 1000 patients. I am learning all the time. I don't claim to have all the answers. I answer questions because I want to help people. Everything about this disease is controversial. I want to write a book which will be a patient guide to Lyme, so questions from patients are helpful to me.
