MDJunction to me

"When I first came to MDJ, I was in a very dark place, and feeling quite alone, I don't know how I found this site, but I have been very grateful ever since, all of you have offered insight to the illness of Bipolar and the other things going on with me, being here has allowed me to find friends, and to feel safe in discussing things that I would never have shared before.

I believe it has also offered me the chance to reach out and help others. A simple Thank you, is all that I have to offer, to this site and to the wonderful people here.

Just wondering if any other LD members here homeschool their kids?

I do, and have since the beginning, so 9 years now if you count that first preschool year. So, my oldest is in 7th grade this year, my middle is in 5th, and my youngest is in 3rd. I have all girls. My youngest has a mild learning disability due to her Neurofibromatosis, and my middle has her share of health issues.

Homeschooling has always been our first choice, and it has greatly benefitted the youngest two due to their medical conditions. Homeschooling is a challenge as it is, and takes an abundance of patience & dedication, then add in medical issues with a couple of them, and mine most of all, it has been interesting, but still so worth it.

However when mom, the teacher, is also in a constant battle with something such as Lyme, homeschooling is an even bigger challenge. It would be so GREAT to have added support (& provide it in return) to other homeschooling "Lymie" moms who 'get it' & understand.

To share our struggles, our triumphs, and all our little secrets on how we still manage to make it work so well!

Anybody else??

Well we have ours in Public School - and this school system this year isnt as good as where we were last year. CO has a pretty bad rating nation wide, and last year we happened to be in one of the only High ranking counties...so this year, for my oldest it is a struggle...the twins are just better at school - and frankly - I have to have that break - and they need that socialization...

But i am looking into home enrichment programs. My oldest procrastinates (hmmm wonder where that comes from ) and has to work harder. She is very average, where the twins are way above - at least according to the testing systems. We have to work on changing the way she holds a pen/pencil - hubby has her do math drills - and her spelling, for a 4th grader is horrid. But she is loving reading....oh here I go off on a tangent. BUT - I am really looking for something that she can do online on fridays - since they dont have school here on fridays...

But You know that I am always here for you hun - home schooling or not!!!

My sister homeschools her kids, and she has LD. Well, she says she HAD LD. She believes she is cured. And hopefully, that is the case. She was caught early and treated properly for an early case. I hope that she will be fine and never had a problem again, but IDK, she's still got a lot of aches and pains that aren't just cuz she's fallen off horses and stuff like that. Her aches and pains are really, IMHO, due to the LD. And I also think she has/had co-infections. She has a lot of symptoms that I see, some rage (bart, anyone? LOL) and some other things that make me think about it...

But, the school system here sucks, and the kids were being abused by the other kids in it, so she yanked them out and started home schooling. She and her hubby take turns working with the kids, cuz he works an evening job, what they would call in the military a "swing shift." And they do really well, they have improved so significantly. My neice was floundering in public school, and now I'd say she's really flourishing. She's doing much better than we ever expected, and my sister is forming a much closer bond with the kids. I've said over and over again, I will likely NEVER have my own kids in a public school system, not so long as the public school systems around here are the way they are. There is only one county around here that I'd trust my kids to be schooled in. Otherwise, I'll be homeschooling them myself. That is, if we decide that it'll be safe to have kids. IDK about that one yet. There is still yet so much to be done with me in my own treatment first. Perhaps we will adopt? IDK...We shall see!!

But I think it's amazing that you can do all you do, and I think it's great that you homeschool. I think it's an amazing thing to do for your kids!

Just because it's impossible doesn't mean it can't happen.

I'm not a doc, so anything I say is my opinion only. Nothing I say is meant as offense, I offer what I can as help.

I believe in educating myself on all my medical issues and being my own advocate, for no one else with do that on my behalf. I recommend we all do the same!

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Perhaps I truly am insane for expecting these docs to listen to me when I say the same things repeatedly to no avail? LOL. I am tired of seeking out new docs and getting the same result time and again...Forgive me if I seem bitter some days.

Thanks, you two!

I hear ya, Christine,.. I Love my kids, but there are times where we all just need a break, LOL

We do participate with a couple of homeschool groups so they get the socialism with other homeschooled kids. They go on field trips together, too, and that's always fun. Plus, they all really got into drama this year, which is our homeschool theatre group, and the kids' bowling league is also in the homeschool group. And the girls have been involved in sports, dance & swimming various times. I had to cut us back to just a couple of outside groups though because it was just to much, LOL

Oh,.. have you looked into Sylvan? They have online courses for people who can't, or don't want to, go in to their physical facilities. I have no idea what that costs though.

Jen, I hear ya... I haven't fwlt good at the school systems in a long time. That's my own personal feeling, and I do not object to other's choices, but for me, homeschooling is what I'm meant to be doing. I just hope I can keep my sanity through it, LOL!

And yes,... you know adoption is a wonderul option to consider... so many sweet babes out there that could good use good mommies & daddies! You'll figure out what it right for you....

Thank you both for the support,... can always count on you!
