Hi, I've been newly diagnosed with Lyme and am still trying to learn as much as possible. My symptoms aren't debilitating thankfully, they're mild, but many and seem to change for no apparent reason. (It began with the worst flu I ever had in my life 2 1/2 mos ago and I've been symptomatic since.) I've always been so healthy I'm not used to this. I was taking a strong antibiotic for a month and almost all of the symptoms disappeared, but the past week I stopped. I had to stop it because I couldn't clear up a yeast infection, and it was screwing up my gut and I thought it was causing nausea which hasn't faded any since stopping the drug. Since being off the antibiotics which has only been a week, I've noticed the symptoms starting to come back I had before and I know I'm going to have to go back on them. Every day the symptoms are a little more noticeable and numerous, so I know I need to get on them again ASAP. I'm just curious has anybody had any luck with any other method of treatment? I'm extremely interested in another mode of treatment besides antibiotics, but I didn't think there was any. Thank you for taking the time to listen.

Hi Matt, and welcome.

There are plenty of different, natural supplements/treatments people take/use. Some of them are cat's claw (Samento), olive leaf extract, garlic, oil of oregano, tincture of teasel...the list goes on--I swear I learn of something new every couple of days. People also use reiki, massage, biofeedback, rife machines, acupuncture, craniosacral therapy, EFT...the list goes on, lol.

Are you being treated by a doctor well-versed in Lyme (Lyme literate)? Most of them are at least aware of some of the natural antibiotics, although most still use various antibiotics (oral and IV), anti-fungals, etc. There really are an awful lot of ways to attack this disease and folks often experiment, through trial and error to see what works for them. You just sort of have to do your own research, decide what course you want to take. If you are really set on a natural route, you might consider finding a naturapathic doctor (N.D.) or even an herbalist familiar with treating Lyme--or there are MD's that will work with you combining various treatments (like mine). Also there are books, and wholly natural "protocols" formulated by Lyme Literate MD's. Look up Buhner, Burrascano, MacDonald...yup, lots of info, and different approaches.

As to the yeast and stomach difficulties---while on antibiotics (abx) you must take probiotics (and there are plenty of those to choose from, too, lol). (Kind of surprised your doctor didn't tell you that, but oh well.) I also take enzymes and a liver support supplement---and lots of other supplements to power up my immune system (with guidance from my LLMD).

To sum up, there are plenty of things to try and I'm sure plenty of people will chime in with recommendations. (There are people on this board who have never taken a synthetic antibiotic--used natural supps only--and gotten well.) Seems though, that different things work for different people--different people have different symptoms and the degree with which they suffer varies too. Seems to be kind of individual, based on your own body and it's response to Lyme and probably how long you've had the disease, how strong your immune system is, whether you have co-infections...yeah, it's a toughie. Keep reading and researching. (I'm surprised you haven't heard from lots of folks here already--maybe cuz it's the weekend?) Best of luck to ya. - Peggy

Hello and welcome!

You received great advice from PegB. In your bio it says you were diagnosed by a ND. Did he/she not suggest a treatment plan? If your ND is not familar with treating lyme then you might want to get Buhner's book "Healing Lyme" and see if he/she will guide you through the treatment options. Also does your ND do vega testing? This is a great tool that my ND uses to see which supplement is right for me. I am one of the ones who is nearly sypmptom free from just the natural route.

In the meantime try to get the yeast thing under control. Maybe ask your GP for an antifungal and take some probiotics.

Good luck and take care,

Denise

That's encouraging! My ND said I HAD to be on antibiotics in order to kill the Lyme. She had Lyme herself and I guess that's the route she took and told me it's the only thing she prescribes them for. I don't have any idea what vega testing is? I did benefit from taking teasel, but she told me it wouldn't kill the Lyme and I needed antibiotics. So, here's my question. Is the Lyme Disease ever cured/killed forever or is it just treated forever? Once you get Lyme are you on a life long treatment cycle even after being symptom free, do you have to keep treating it to stay that way? I just want to know what I'm up against. I will look up that book, I feel so ignorant though I have read some stuff on the internet but it was just the basics on the disease and not too much about teatments. Thank you for taking the time to help me out and point me in the right direction, much appreciated!!!

I think there's a big controversy about whether there's a cure for Lyme, but ask Connie D on this board what she thinks. She's symptom free for some time now, and she's not the only one I've heard of. Keep in mind that most people who get cured or are in remission for long periods if not forever (who knows!) may not ever come back to these boards and let us know. I was so horrified (and still am at times) at all the bad news about relapses and years of treatment or different types of treatment for long periods of time only to have it recur. I've since talked to 3 people I didn't even know, OFFLINE who went through a couple of years of a variety of treatment and have been symptom free, one for a couple of decades! So there is hope. Don't get discouraged. Keep a positive attitude and I believe we will all get better with the appropriate help.

I have had lyme for over a year....I agree with Wolfpack, I don't think we will ever know if we are ever free of lyme.

I've been doing pretty good since Dec of last year, yes I still have mild knee pain that comes and goes...I do notice when I'm stressed or sick the lyme seems to show its face again, but once well it goes away...

Hi Matt and welcome to the group!

I'm one of the people who is fully recovered from Lyme via the alternative route and I didn't take a single dose of conventional antibiotics for my lyme disease and coinfections. (I'm not completely against conventional antibiotics...they are a great thing when we need them, but it was just not the route I chose to treat my Lyme).

You asked, do you have to keep treating Lyme to stay symptom free? Well, for me, I am still kind of new in recovery, but I am on a 'maintenance dose' of samento. I take one to three drops per day. I'll stop for a week or two, then start the samento again. I'll probably do this for another year or so, then just see what happens. My lyme was a zero at my last doctor's appointment and I am symptom free. Keep reading and researching. You really can be free of Lyme disease.

Peace,

Connie

That's encouraging, the only downside is it sounds like there's rarely a quick cure, it's a time consuming process. I still haven't taken any more antibiotics, I haven't been treating it for a couple of weeks. My symptoms are intensifying but doesn't interfere too much with daily living. I have to make a decision here asap about a mode of treatment. It's very frustrating to be sick, I've never been sick in my life except a few viruses which I recovered quickly from. I guess Lyme takes a toll on your emotions too. Anyways, I just want to thank everybody for your support and time taken to respond. It's a really neat thing knowing there's people out there that understand and know exactly what you're going through and want to share experiences and wisdom! Thank you

Hey Matt. Just wanna say don't wait too long to get started treating your Lyme. Seems the longer it's allowed to invade your body, the harder it is to eradicate. And I can almost guarantee those symptoms will intensify and multiply, left untreated. Not trying to scare you, just make sure you're aware--and light a fire under your....lol.

(Can't tell you how much I wish I'd been properly tested and treated back when I originally was infected. Those who catch (treat it correctly) it early are much better off.)

Take care.
