MDJunction to me

"When I first came to MDJ, I was in a very dark place, and feeling quite alone, I don't know how I found this site, but I have been very grateful ever since, all of you have offered insight to the illness of Bipolar and the other things going on with me, being here has allowed me to find friends, and to feel safe in discussing things that I would never have shared before.

I believe it has also offered me the chance to reach out and help others. A simple Thank you, is all that I have to offer, to this site and to the wonderful people here.

Hello....I'm a 38 yr old female who was just diagnosed with Lyme. I recently went camping and was concened with a bite mark that had what looked like a bruise half way around it. I was also feeling fatigue and soreness. I went to my primary care and she ran a ton of tests including Lyme...antibodies were positive and Western Blot also came back positive. So I have Lyme...I couldn't have got it camping though...there wasnt enough time for antibodies to create from camping to Dr. visit...so I must have got bitten previously. I do recall I had a blood blister on the back of my leg...about overt a month ago. I thought i cut myself shaving to be honest, and wiped it off with a tissue. I'm thinking it was a tick afterall.

So...now I'm on Doxy for 3 weeks and it makes me sick to my stomach at times and i still feel rotten, meaning tired, achy and misreable. My moods are HORRIBLE...I feel rage and out of control at times over little things...is this normal? I have 2 weeks left of the antibiotics...when might I start feeling better? I cant believe I got this...but I'm grateful that it appears to have been caught early. Does anyone have any advice on how to deal with this better? Thanks so much.

I have a friend who has found a tick bite twice, tested positively immediately, and with 4 weeks of antibiotics each time has come out to be perfectly fine.

Could you be sick from a month old tick bite? Yes certainly, but unless your immune system was weak to begin with, you should be able to fight it for a while before it makes you too sick. Antibiotics should help a great deal, but there may be other factors that we don't know about.

Doxy is a VERY TOUGH medication to take. You can ask the doctor for something else if it is bothering you that much. Minocycline is a thought, just get a good enough dose.

Feeling rotten could be a sign that the antibiotic is working. It could be a herx reaction, which is basically the germ dying and pumping more toxins in to you. You feel worse, before you feel better. Many of us out here have been through it.

Otherwise, your symptoms sound like a combination of neurological, psychological and arthritic, which is a potent combination if you've only been sick for a short while. It might be worth trying a different antibiotic to see if that helps.

You may also want to ask the doctor to extend the treatment to two months. If they are following the IDSA guidelines, then they'll know that it is not unheard of to do two months instead of one.

Your symptoms sure sound like Lyme, but give the medicine a little more time to work and let us know (often) how you are feeling.
