Hi. I'm new around here but had to vent somewhere. I was diagnosed with Lyme disease a few months ago. I was having very MS like symptoms- numbness, tingling, tremors as well as heart palpitations and lightheadedness.

The Doxycycline helped, but I relapsed pretty quickly after I was finished. My family doctor blew me off, but eventually referred me to an infectious disease doc.

Her brilliant idea is to assume that my Lyme test was a false positive (I tested positive for acute, but apparently not for chronic) and send me for an MRI and a spinal tap to rule out MS before she'll consider Lyme disease. Her theory is I "improved" on the doxycyline (which she insists does not cross the blood brain barrier and couldn't possibly help my neurological symptoms) because I probably had a sinus infection at the same time that I tested positive for the Lyme disease and that I've been suffering from MS the whole time.

I couldn't make this up if I tried. I've been alternately crying and fighting the urge to bash her head in for the last two days. Is this common, and if so how do you deal with it?

Welcome to a group of people just as frustrated with docs! I think infectious disease doctors should not be allowed to treat people with Lyme! Do not go back to that doctor and go to a Lyme literate doctor instead!

I will write you tomorrow with some suggestions when I have more time.

Welcome to our group... We are here to help!

I went to an infectious disease specialist who told me- I kid you not- Lymes is a virus and goes away on its own, if it wouldn't the human race would be extinct. I haven't been able to figure out if he was talking about viruses in general or just Lymes, that was a year ago and I'm still scratching my head about that one. Not to mention the guy was a complete jerk and I was in tears by the time I left his office. So yeah you're not the only one!

Welcome Melly,

I have been shaking my fists at the computer this evening with all these stories of ignorant Doctors!!

We all share your misery with first trying to find a Dr. that knows what the heck they are talking about and then trying to find proper treatment.

Remind this Dr. (if you care to go back), that you have multiple symptoms of lyme and that lyme is a clinical diagnosis. Keep reading and arm yourself with information.

Good luck and take care, Denise

P.S. To Amy: Your stupid Doctor is off the charts! Did he/she even go to medical school? Lyme is a bacterial infection not a virus!! Unbelievable!!

I went to a Lyme literate Neurologist and he said too that doxy doesn't cross the blood brain barrier and if you're treating with antibiotics you have to get iv infusions for it to get all the bacteria. I'd have to agree with him since I started improving as soon as I started iv infusions. He said he had studied in New York with an LLMD and that a few months of nonresistant iv antibiotics is enough to knock out the bacteria in central nervous system.

I'm kind of surprised that you could even see an infectious disease doctor. I was told all the ones in my state refuse to even see you if you have Lyme. Good Luck!

Smee: I've just had an apostrophe.
Captain Hook: I think you mean an epiphany.
Smee: No... lightning has just struck my brain.
Captain Hook: Well, that must hurt.

Hi Melly,

We're all frustrated with the ignorance of Dr's, my son had a bad experience with an ID Doc as well. Have found a new great resource for him and me too now that I am infected as well.

Keep looking, you'll find the right place. Everyone here is very helpful.

Take care,

Ann

Thank you all so much. While it's oddly comforting to know that I'm not alone in this experience, it's also pretty frightening to realize there are so many ignorant doctors out there. I can't believe so many people have had similiar experiences.

I went to an infectious disease specialist who told me- I kid you not- Lymes is a virus and goes away on its own, if it wouldn't the human race would be extinct

OMG. If it weren't so scary that this actually came out of a doctor's mouth, it would be funny.

Hi Melly,

welcome to the wonderful world of Lyme.....

I cannot believe what happened to you....I am appalled at the ignorance surrounding this disease, but your story about that ID doc saying it's a virus is just plain stupid. What an idiot!!

Thank goodness you are smart enough to check it out yourself!!! I would get to an LLMD. You can pm Jaime with a list of LLMDs in your area. I'm not sure where you are, or if you're even interested, but I was treated by a biological MD in the South with alternative therapies, homeopathics, herblas, and nutritional supplements. If you want some info about him, just pm me or Clayton, or Denise, or ARF. We all go to the same doc. I've been getting better since March of 2007, so I'm feeling like a new person. You can get well, too. Keep reading and researching and asking lots of questions.

Peace,

Connie

Please do not take anything I say as medical advice. I am not a doctor
