I have found many people who are struggling with similar issues banding together to help each other. In 2003 I had a gastric bypass, in 2006 I had emergency small bowel resection surgery due to adhesions which removed 60% of the small intestines, in 2007 I had a blood transfusion and then iron by I.V. infusions for 2 months as my hemoglobin count had gotten down to 6 (it should have been between 12.5 and 15.5). Then in October 2007 the bumps on my thighs showed up and my life has been a living hell since then. Could I have gotten an infection from the blood transfusion???

By the end of Nov 07, the “bumps” had turned to painful, itchy, lesions that appeared deep and un-healing. By mid Dec numerous lesions were on both of my thighs, stomach, neck, face, and both forearms with my lips fully inflamed too. A few lesions were noticed on my ankles, top of feet, top of toes, top of fingers, in the cuticles on both hands, one ear lobe, both shins, both elbows, and the back of my neck.

Since June 2007, all monthly lab results have normal readings except for two areas: “White Blood Cell Count” which is always in the high ranges around 13.0 (s/b 3.80 – 10.80), and the “Absolute Neutrophils” is always in the high ranges around 10,965 (s/b 1,500 – 7,800).

The lab results for Feb 08 showed WBC at 11.4, Absolute Neutrophils at 8,247 and the Western Blot Test only showed “Reactive” for Band 41 (IGM).

The lab results for Apr 24, 08 showed WBC at 12.8, Absolute Neutrophils at 9,177 and the Western Blot Test showed “Reactive” for (IGM) Band 41 & Band 23 resulting in a “Positive” reading for B. Burgdorferi AB.

For some reason my primary doctor thinks this is a false positive and refused to treat the infection. He

said I need to go to the Mayo Clinic and see a Rheumatologist and a Gastroenterologist for evaluation and treatment. Mayo clinic is not on my BCBS insurance so I am in desperate need of a Lyme Literate doctor in Jacksonville Florida area.

ANY HELP FROM ANYONE IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!

Hi Kira77,

Both lab test results you are asking about, WBC and ANC (Absolute Neutrophil Count) are indicative of infection. Both being high means you are actively fighting an infection. You need to find out what infection you have, of course. As background...you know what white blood cells are, they fight disease in your blood stream. A neutrophil is a form of white blood cell. One example of a neutrophil is pus, which you would see in a boil or badly infected wound.

The skin lesions are kind of tough, because rashes are associated with Lyme, but Bartonella can have lesions, mainly in it's more serious forms which is usually raised lesions that are rounded. As a co-infection with Lyme, you usually see what looks like red stretch marks, mainly on the stomach, back and sides; or even lots of small red dots, mainly on the underarms, behind the knees or backs of legs...kind of like spotted tick fever shows around the joints. The lesions are kind of a new thing to me, so I can't speak much about them.

AS far as finding an LLMD in Florida...well...that might be difficult. If I remember correctly from things that I have read, the state of Florida is pretty pissy about Lyme and treating Lyme. They don't want to admit they have it there, I guess because it would hurt tourism. Most folks from Florida travel to other states for treatment.

You can check with Jaime, the moderator of this group. Send her a PM and ask for doctors near you. Be patient, I think she is not feeling well right now. She should get back to you within a couple of days.

Good luck, Kira77. Please feel free to send me a PM if you have any questions, or I will see you out here on the boards.

Tom

There is a possibility that you could have received Lyme from a transfusion. Studies have been done and shown that Bb can survive blood banking procedures and can live in cold storage for up to six months.

I am not a doctor, and nothing I say here should be taken as medical advice of any kind.

A good way to find the nearest LLMD is through the Lyme Association website. www.lymediseaseassociation.org

Just go to their physician referral section.

I don't really know about the lesions but you could always try calling around to dermatologists and ask if they would treat someone with Lyme's.

Hope you can get some help,

Jessica

Captain Hook: Well, that must hurt.
