So, I'm in college and I've been sick for the last two months. Last week they figured out I have Lyme disease and I started antibiotics (doxcycline).

Am I ever going to get better? I used to have so much energy and I was at the top of my class. Now I can hardly make myself get out of bed, I can't concentrate on my studies, and I just want to cry all the time.

Worst of all, I feel awful having to ask other people to understand: asking them for help, asking my professors for extensions, asking my friends to understand that I don't feel well. It puts more stress on them, and I feel like a burden.

Sad day.

What do y'all do that makes you feel better?

First off - you owe it to yourself to get the right treatment. It's easy for primary care docs to give you a few weeks of doxy and say 'have a nice day'. Make sure you hook up with an LLMD.

It's a tough disease with a lot of misinformation (as I'm learning myself). Not everyone is going to understand. It can be very frustrating at times so I sympathize with you.

Knowing I'm not alone makes me feel better. Having great doctors in my corner makes me sleep well at night. And most of all - a support system that listens. This place is one of them.

Hope you feel better.

Thank you...

Maybe I need to find a good doctor. This was the first time I'd ever been to a doctor in this state, and she called me to tell me it was Lyme and told me to take the doxycycline for a month. That's all she said and I haven't heard anything since...

My best friends MUm is a nurse who was bitten just this year and she has had 3 monthly treatments of doxy.. sadly she is not improving as they would have hoped. She is now understanding she may have to look for a different protocol.

make sure as the above forumite suggested you get a LLMD. Do as much research as you can so you are fulyl informed and feel confident in your choices.

A change of diet can help massively too. Lyme borrelia feeds on acid so any foods causing scid such as wheats, gluten, beef and sugar will make things more difficult.

What to change to are alkaline PRODUCING foods.

There are some excellent books on how to alkaline your diet.

Theres a lot of treatment protocols both natural and anti-biotic and different things work for different people.

I have had lyme for 24 years I have been through hell and back as i was only diganosed this year aged 36. Universtiy was hard for me I never finished it. However a reduced timetable may help or even possibly a year out to rest.

I hope you feel better soon and find a protocol that works for you.

I know how you feel... at 18, I went from being an Honors student with an 18k scholarship to a private liberal arts college to bedridden and sick as a dog. I've learned since then (I'm 22) how debilitating Lyme can be. I've learned to ask for help, and to not be ashamed of that. I have to come to grips with Lyme being a permanent part of who I am... and when you finally accept that, it's a little easier to live that way. I really hope you don't get to that place - I'd had it for 4 or 5 years before they found it, which made it extremely hard to treat. I've been up and down ever since. I know its tough - stick it out. And please, please see a real Lyme dr... a months worth of doxy may not be the best course for you if you don't want Lyme to come back a month afterwards...

Jen Marie, that sounds like where I'm at now, and I want so badly to finish this year. But I was also wanting to go to grad school, and now I'm not sure that will happen. They caught it probably a couple months after I was bitten.

Fraggles, where can I find information about alkaline producing foods? I've never heard of that... Is there info somewhere on this forum?

Hey there...I know this is really hard...I went through college ill, and there were times where this disease took nearly everything I had been working for...because I had so big relapses...

So here is what I suggest:

Educate yourself. We can help you with that here. Our facts section is full of important information. And of course, always feel free to ask.

You will should also meet with your adviser. But go into it armed with information. If they dont know enough about this disease, then they need to...and THAT is part of their job. You may also want to meet with the dept that assists students with disabilities. And they will need to be educated too.

This is a disease that can become very serious, and disabling. You are under going your first treatment, and it could be very rough on you. Ya know the saying, "It gets worse before it gets better" that is exactly how it can be for a Lymie.

You are going to need to make dietary changes - and if you get your food through the school, they MUST accommodate you. Gluten Free, no refined sugars and no processed foods. They can assist with this.

You also need to detox while on treatment. Half your weight in ounces of plain or mineral water daily. Plus 2-3 cups of water with lemon or lime juice to reduce acidity.

There is a lot of info around to help you through all of this...and we are here too...

Hang in there - this does suck - but you can get through it.

PM for anything

Christine

~~~Hey Goldi,
~~~I've been a this for ten years now. I've seen dozens of symptoms come and go. If your lucky you'll stumble on something that will palliate a symptom.

~~~Meanwhile the next best thing to do is get your diet under control. No junk food! Nutritiously dense foods - no empty calories, no sodas -plenty of water instead flavored with fresh lemon or grean tea, etc. Little or no dairy, little or no animal products, lots of fruits and veggies, more veg than fruits.
~~~Good sleep.

~~~In other words you must work from the ground up. Take good care of your body and mind 'cause the lyme wants to distroy you.
~~~And dont forget to feed your spirit. Get some self help books. I've read hundreds. Buddhist philosophy is my favorite. Lama, teacher, Surya Das, eastern religion section, is a great start.

~~~You must find, or create, deep meaning for your life. I've found through my own experience that true healing has less to do with getting rid of the lyme disease than as much as conquering "the self" or the ego.
~~~Sorry to go esoteric on you but after ten years of this crap gorrilla on my back this is where I find myself and this, paradoxically, is right where I need to be. It's where I find the deepest meaning in this life.

~~~I hope and pray you rid yourself of this lyme and soon. Meanwhile center yourself (you are at the center of the universe, ponder on this one!), in a deeply meaningful environment.
~~~Oftimes the most support you can get is from yourself. Start there!Your with you 24-7. Depend on yourself. Get outside support when you can. Read read read ... Meditate ... Build up your personal wisdom to overflowing so that you can help someone who will need to lean on you.

~~~Here is your true medicine ... Heal your spirit then help to heal someone elses. Maybe the only way to beat lyme is to transcend it. One way or the other, either phisically or spiritually, you will beat this monster ...
~~~And lean hard on us here at this site where you could not possibly be a burden for we completely understand what you are going through.

~~~This is very sad, yes. But there is a light switch. Wisdom is the switch. Wisdom is the light. You've got to turn it on! You are the light! Turn on and light up someone elses dark.
~~~OK?!

~~~Easy for me to say? I'm very close to a wheelchair and the third year into this thing I was so sick that I asked God to take my life.
~~~SHe didn't because SHe's a Genius! I'm glad! This is hard work but I'm wiser for it. You too, OK? Use this lyme for the fertilizer to bring your lilly out of this Golden Swamp!

~~~And eat some dark chocolate!
~~~Peace, Out ...

``` ~~~from my straight jacket~~~out on a limb~~~lookin like a cocoon~~~hangin by a thread~~~waitin for a butterfly~~~under the moon~~~Lovey-Dovey~~~Mitchell ```
I struggle with Chronic Lyme for four years. I did everything right, went to a doctor right away after being bitten by a tick but he treated me with steriods. Looking back that was insane. As a result I ended up with Chronic Lyme. I bounced around the medical system, my wife left me, I lost my job....I decided that if I was going to live I had to do something very different. So I fired all my doctors and went off on my own. I know this sounds scary...but the reality is that we are on our own anyhow. My health insurance company could care less if I lived or died. I explored a lot of alternative therapies. Some were good, some were a waste of time and money...but eventually I found some that worked. I made radical changes in my diet giving up alcohol, sugar and caffeine. Then gave up pasta, decaf, soda and bread. Basically my diet became meat and potatoes. I began a herbal treatment called the Cowden Protocol and bought herbs from Nutramedix. After two years of herbal treatments and a strict diet I am Lyme free. It was kind of a shock at first. I disbelieved it was possible to heal from Chronic Lyme. The second shock is that when I came back to the Lyme support groups....they dismissed me. They said it was not possible to heal from Chronic Lyme...and would not allow me to speak. I was perhaps more shocked by this then anything. I think because I am not a doctor they thought had no interest in my story. I guess I need to come in with a white smock.
Despite all the negativity it is possible to heal from Lyme. If I could heal, then you can too.
Stephen
