My son (15 months old) and I were both recently diagnosed with Lyme and coinfections. I unknowingly passed my son the infection either during pregnancy or through breastfeeding. Does anyone know about babies and Lyme? What is the treatment? How long? Can he be cured or will this disease haunt him the rest of his life? I am so worried and scared. Any information would help.

There are plenty of people on this site that will chime in soon - they have kids. I do not. This is good info for any of us to have so I'll look forward to other people's posts.

Sorry about your son.

Hey mammabear.

My name is Tom and I am a new member. Let me throw in my two cents....

As with any of us, a baby can be treated with antibiotics, Amoxicillin most likely. Is your doctor suggesting this, or are they doing nothing at this point?

It's not a good idea to wait, if you have a solid, positive test for your son. If necessary, you should search out a Lyme literate doctor, with experience treating children. I would also recommend calling ILADS and asking for their advice. They are here, in my home state of Maryland. The phone number is 301-263-1080. Maybe they can help point you in the right direction. I can only imagine infants are hard to treat, because they can't tell you where it hurts.

There is not much on the web site about specifically treating infants, which is why I am suggesting a phone call. I certainly hope you can get some information.

I am praying for you and your son.

Tom

Hi Mamabear,

Please check your pms. Yes, you and he can get better. We do not have to live with these illnesses. We can get them in remission. No one is sure if it can be eradicated. I know we can get in remission and be symptom free. I am living proof.

You are in my thoughts and prayers.

God bless,

Connie

yes, you both can get well. is he showing symptoms by chance? usually they say if not symptomatic not to treat, but amoxi is drug of choice for kids, as an adult you have a whole bunch of yummy stuff to choose from...I say that jokingly. But people do get well, there is hope, if you need a llmd pm me ok honey, hang in there

a quick addition to all thats been posted

have his immune system checked as well--having an 18 yr old who was also gestationally infected Ive found out thru experience

check his IGG and IGA as well as IGM ( these arent for specifics like LymeIGG but the general levels)--if any are even slightly low youll need a good immunologist as this will affect more than the Lyme. Its still unclear if the Lyme while pregnant affects this or if its coincidental

Babies and kids in general respond faster ( and their rejuvenation is better) than even adults or teens--it seems teens have the hardest time maybe due to hormonal and developmental changes

Also Id recommend you note this in his baby book/vaccination book so that should he develop symptoms later on youll retest

be assured that far more get cured, others in permanent remission and very few become chronic--especially with prompt thorough treatment by a knowledgeable experienced professional!!

A very good site for info and advice made up of parents ( some health professionals) of kids with Lyme is on yahoo health groups: Lyme Aid Parents--its via emails and posts so very easy

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Lyme_Aid_Parents/

it is important to be a part of a few different groups for ideas, info and advice.

be very wary and careful about using alternative treatments on such a young child.

and always gain good medical advice even about supplements and vitamins

there are a scant few pediatric LLMDs and theyre hard to find--one in Ct is Dr Jones but he is swamped--he is available for peer to peer ( your Dr calls him for advice) easier than getting appt--

good luck and I hope you dont have to be here for too long ( that you and your child are quickly healed)

Finette

My 2.5 yr old has lymes with symptons and a soild positive test from lab corp. We had her on amoxcil. for an ear infection, sinus infection, before starting her lymes treatment. Three days into the amoxcil. treatment she spiked a 104 fever and was very fatigued. We took her to an LLMD monday and her llmd said amoxcil. makes babies more sick! She is doing better today. She is taking zithro. MWF. Along with omega 3's, probiotic and vit.C and multiple vit. Are you sure he is not showing any symptons? My DD gets sick with upper res. alot and can never get over a simple cold w/out antibo. She doesn't sleep, throws up and gets loose stools everyday. Have you had his CD 57 pannel checked to see how low his immune system is? You have to get it done at labcorp but it gives you a good idea how good he is doing. Ours was very low at 30.

I've read that any penicillin is bad for Lyme -- it's a cell wall inhibitor and will throw the spirochetes into the 3rd phase - the cyst form that much faster. Lyme is much harder to kill once it gets to that stage! Lyme does not need a cell wall to live -- they will just roll into a ball/cyst when that happens. That may be why your child got sicker on it - or it could just be allergic.

I know doctors don't really agree with this but there has been research on it - I can find a link if anyone wants to read it.

That is exactly what my LLMD said. Penicillin made her much worse. I'd like to read the article. She is doing so much better just two days off penicillin.

Good! I'm glad your LLMD gets it - most docs don't. I've had to teach a few about that whole thing myself. I'll see what I can find for you in a few minutes!
