Left over IV / PICC Medications??

Hello fellow Lyme sufferers..

In reagards to PICC line patients and IV infusions... I realized upon my new scheduled delivery of IV meds, Saline and Heparin that I will have a supply left over. I can't stand the fact that what ever reamins left over after treatment gets thrown out! I do understand why however, It pertains to the HIPPA act.

So my thought was rather than to have it thrown away, I tried to find a use for it. I did just that by contacting my Vetrenarian, who by the way founded Common Sense for Animals, it is a nonprofit organization founded in 1990 by Robert R. Blease, D.V.M.(www.commonsenseforanimals.org)

So, I found a great cause to donate my left over supplies and want to bring some awareness to anyone who may have left over supplies that feels the same way I do about just disposing of it.

Thanks for reading this and possibly taking this into consideration.

Best wish's to all for good health!

Carol

Thanks! I don't have leftover IV stuff, but I do have a lot of meds left over, like Mobic, elavil, corticosteroids, other anti inflammatories, Lyrica, Neurontin, the list is endless. I wonder if they would take that? Hmmmm...I'll check it out. Thanks!

Hummm... yeah me too, tons of pills I haven't used.

Is all you can do is ask. This I found funny, my Vet told me he takes animal medicine for his arthritis. He said it's cheaper and it works! Wonder if it's legal. Nah, I don't want to know.

So you thought my idea was a good one? Me too. Thank you!

How is your Lyme doing or how are you feeling?

When I had my picc line I ended up having to have it removed in an emergency and I had just gotten a new shipment. It was about a month after Katrina and everyone kept telling me that I had to throw it away and I was appaulled by that. SO I finally talked to my local congressman and he contacted the redcross in my area and they took all of the sterile tubing and heparin and things. I was never able to get rid of the actual rochepin though and now I wish I would have thought about the vets.

Hi Carroll,

Thanks for asking how my Lyme is doing! I have no symptoms of Lyme that I can feel at this moment. I am so grateful for that. I cannot believe the trouble you all have with thos picc lines. OUCH! I hope you get better soon.

Yeah and about that vet taking animal medicine. It's probably more common than we'd ever imagine. I knew a vet that gave his antibiotics to his children. Oh well, to each his own.

Great, shh... hope you stay with no symptoms of Lyme!

I hope one day to have no symptoms or daily reminders of Lyme and related complications.

I spoke to my vet yesterday about this subject and he said that they can do anything they want basically. SO if you have left over meds that you are just going to through away or extra tubing and things consider taking it to your local SPCA or vet. The only possible repurcussion would be from medicaid or medicare. What I did just to cover my own butt, was explain the situation to one of my local state representatives and he wrote me a letter saying that he would allow me to donate the stuff and if someone had an issue with he would take care of it.

I don't undertand how there could be any reprocussions from Medicare, medicaid or anyone else. Under the HIPPA laws it would be a violation to re-use or re-distribute any medical supplies. Once medications, medical supplies and same like have been delivered to, or received by a patient it can not by law be returned to be re-used. No matter what the medicine or product. I couldn't bare the thought of it being wasted. In turn I wracked my brain to find a solution, the Veternariian seeemd to be a possible solution, and it turned out to be indeed. Perhaps if I have not had animals, and such a love for them, I would not have arrived at this conclusion to my own personal dilemma.

Well then the hippa laws are wrong. At the time that I had all of these things there were thousands of people in need of these things due to hurricane Katrina and I was appauled that nobody could take these things that were all sealed and sterilized. Things like this are one of the biggest problems with our country and frankly it pisses me off.
