I believe that I have Lyme Disease but my regular MD says that it does not exist in Texas. Does anyone have a recomendation for a doctor in Texas or at least a neighboring state?

Thanks so much!

Oh it exists!!! I got bit in Athens, Texas when I was 13 (1985). I was not hiking or horseback riding - I was asleep in my bed and a tick that was on my dog crawled on me. I've been sick ever since.

Jenp - where in Texas are you? We'll get you to the right place...

(I'm in Dallas).

You will see that a lot of docs won't even talk to us Lymies - it's frustrating but you are in good hands on this site to help you find the resources that you need. You'll need to find a Lyme Literate doctor that will have your testing done through a reputable Lyme testing place like Igenex. I tested negative when I was a teenager and have been though a lot of agonizing pain since. I was finally tested again at 35... and I am now a Chronic Lyme sufferer.

I am in Fort Worth. I went to visit my Dad in South Texas three weeks ago. Within 2 days of finding two ticks on my body I had a weird, moving rash that itches and burns. I have had a huge lump at one of the bite sites on my scalp and from that bite down the side of my neck I have been sore and stiff. The last three days I have had the absolute worst headache I have ever had. I am not typically a baby about this kind of stuff, but I am getting worried. I called my reular doctor immediatly but she did not have time to see me. I called her again 3 days into it and she said she was not familiar with tick bite infections since we do not deal with it in Texas. Finaly when I called for an appointment the 3rd time she told me if I felt that bad I should go to the after hours clinic. I did and that doctor did not seem to know much. She said my symptoms were typical for all nontypical cases of Lyme disease. Can you folllow that? Then she said I can run a test on you for about $300. I asked if it usually showed up in the first week and she said she didn't think so. It probably would not do any good to be tested. Hello??? So I left with a RX for an antihystimine and a antibiotic for 10 days. I took all of both of them but I still have the rash several times a day and I feel horrible...I called her again but it doesn't seem like she knows anything else to do. I would like to find a doctor who cares to treat me. Any help would be much appreciated.

I am glad you are pursuing this proptly. If you can take care of this right away you may save yourself years of more severe problems. I am not sure from your discription if you have Lyme or something else. Lyme symptoms can vary a lot from person to person, so just because your symptoms do not necessarily say Lyme to me does not mean anything. It seems pretty clear to me that the tick(s) gave you something. Besides doctors, you may want to talk to a professor of entemology (bugs). There is a professor Robert Lane, PhD at the University of California at Berkeley who has done work on tick borne diseases. If he does not know what diseases are being spread in your area, he may know who else you should talk to.

You can get doctor referals from ilads.org. (The International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society.) They have a system for that on their web site. I have heard that all the LLMDs (Lyme Literate Medial Doctor) have left Texas because the medical licensing board there was giving them problems. I live in greater Kansas City, and we have a couple of good doctors here. They have just added a new doctor at the clinic where I get my Lyme treatment, so it may be easier to get an appoinment than it used to be. The clinic is in Kansas City, MO and is called Health Centers of America http://www.healthcentersofamerica.com/. There is also a doctor Douglas Brooks in either Olathe or Overland Park Kansas (I am not sure which), and Dr. Brewer in KC, MO. Further south I have heard really great things about a doctor Krist (not sure of spelling) that I think is in Springfield, MO. I also have it in my head that there is at least one LLMD in Wichita. I hope some of this helps you.

If you find a doctor that wants to test your for Lyme, I would not necessarily avoid the test, but do not put too much stock in it. The FDA has not approved any test for the diagnosis of Lyme disease. The tests used most often give both false negatives and false positives. So, the test may make the doctor feel better, and help him or her decide whether or not he or she is willing to treat you. However, if you test negative, you may still have the disease. And, if you test positive you may not have Lyme, but something else.

Lyme and its treatment is full of political controversey! Many LLMDs have been taken before the state medical boards in various states and had their licenses threatened or suspended. The other rumor I have heard about Texas is that the medical board has been taken to court for creating problems for Texas Lyme patients. I hope it is true that someone in Texas is fighting back.

So, welcome to the world of Lyme. I will be praying that you get the help you need and do not get very sick. In the mean while, do everything you can to strengthen your immune system.

My story starts in Texas, it's there, it's EVERYWHERE! There's a lot of people here from Texas, I'm sure one of them can help you find the right doctor. For not having any LD in texas, there sure have been a lot of us infected there, ....
Please do not take anything I say as medical advice. I am not a doctor.

I'll send you the contact info for my doctor - she's about 20 minutes east of Dallas.

She can atleast test you at the better place - Igenex. They seem to have a leg up on the testing. The doctor also has Lyme Disease.

I think for you a few months of antibiotics and supplements would be pretty helpful.

Clayton, probably are you talking about dr.

I saw her and she is very good at Lyme. Even thu, my tests were negative she advices me to keep taking doxy due to my symptoms.

I realize this is an old thread, but I registered in order to resurrect it.

I attempted to call Dr. and apparently she has not treated Lyme disease at all for 4-5 years.

Is there anybody else in Texas (specifically the Dallas area) that can properly treat Lyme disease?

FYI, My 4 y/o daughter has it and is being treated by a doctor in California. My wife has it and is being treated by her Lyme-aware OBGYN. My wife's sister has it and is being treated by the same doctor. The closest doctor to me (apparently) is in Louisiana, and I'm almost certain that I also have Lyme disease.

Hi Skydadt,

You can pm Clayton and she may be able to give you some names in the Dallas area. I believe she knew of a few in that area.

Please do not take anything I say as medical advice. I am not a doctor.

Open your mind to the possibilities available to you.

An attitude of gratitude is good 'medicine,' too.

Wow.

Seriously?

Wow.

Thanks all for the help. I've been in contact with Jaime and I'm to see a doctor in Louisiana on the 11th. Wish me luck!
