Probiotics are incredibly important when you are on abx or antivirals. They say that 75% of our immune system is in our digestive system, so basically when things start to go bad there, they start to go bad everywhere for all intents and purposes. Taking probiotics (atleast 2 billion a day) keep the natural flora in your system so the back bone of your immune system (meaning your digestive tract) doesn't collapse and take everything else with it. I also recommend doing a colon cleanse before starting other things and a parasite cleans to start with a clean slate, so to say.

hello,

I agree probiotics are a must. I just visited my docs and I learned that we should rotate our probiotics, too. Just change the organisms you take about every 30 days. I used to take something called Prescript Assist and now I am taking FloraStor. Just thought I'd pass that around. I haven't read about changing them, but it makes sense.

For those with pancreatitis or prone to pancreatitis, it is suggested you STOP all probiotics when you have sx suggesting your illness may be returning.

Many with Lyme unfortunately develop pancreatic sensitivity-it isnt know if its due to the meds or herbs or simply the effect of battling the infection(s) .

A recent study showed that taking probiotics during a pancreatic attack can increase mortality and morbidity--this mean you may become severly worse and even die!

the study is summarized here for those wishing more info:

Lancet. 2008 Feb 23;371(9613):651-9. Epub 2008 Feb 14

an abstract can be found at:http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18279948

It isnt known if this unusual and unexpected response to probiotics ( which are very helpful in most other cases) will also occur with other GI infections such as gall bladder, ileitis, colitis etc. It may be that probiotics will help the gut up until there is a local infection and then it is something that will worsen the illness.

As always there is new info coming out every day showing that everything has both its good and bad sides and we need to be fully aware of all to stay safe!

FYI both my son and I take daily Pearls by Enzymatic Therapy and I drink 8-10 oz Kefir every morning. But after this report I will stop both as soon as my very frequent pancreatic attacks begin!! and resume only after I feel better.

stay safe

Finette

FInette, thank you for sharing this info..very important to know. Just curious , what does a pancratic attack feel like? So if one of us were to have one come on and we're taking our probitoics, we would know to stop.... I ask this because I used to get gall bladder attacks. I went to a natural chiropractor, she didn't do normal chiro things, she did some applied kineseology (sp, I know, I know, haha) , and she taught me how to push stuff out of my gall bladder, she said it's THE MOST over done surgery in the US. I already hate I had my thyroid taken out, someone said once, about some organs we seem to be able to "take out" and be fine with, "God didn't put anything in your body for no reason" (I mention my thyroid, because I had a tumor on it, had half removed, it was thought to be cancer, second half got a tumor, which was very rare, surgery right away, took the rest of it out, and I wonder if LD is responsible for my body growing these tumors, had them in my breasts too, removed them too, no not my breasts, the tumors, haha)
Please do not take anything I say as medical advice. I am not a doctor.

Hi Jaime

Pancreatitis ( or even just a 'touchy' pancreas) givess pain in the upper left area of the abdomen near the rib line, sometimes traveling towards the back.It may feel as if the pain is central upper abdomen too.

It can be a constant ache or throb, usually dull , not sharp but as it progresses can turn sharp. It lasts days to weeks.

It can come on suddenly or build slowly. It usually but not always gets mighty severe. Many end up needing very powerful pain killers for hours to days.

The pain may begin or worsen with eating ( due to spasms of the ducts that release digestive enzymes that the pancreas makes)

It can also feel worse if you lie flat, especially on your back.

other sx are: nausea ( if there's vomiting, it doesnt releive pain),fever chills, fast heartbeat, dehydration if you havent eaten, drank enough from the nausea.

The self help ( IF youve been dx and the sx are within the "safe" range as told to you by your Dr) is to avoid eating and stick with clear fluids 1-2 days then gradually add thicker broths and other liquids and then bland light foods slowly adding to a normal diet. DO NOT try to self help unless youve already been under a Drs care--this can get dangerous including shock!! The pancreas can dump enzymes which will digest itself or other parts of your own GI system!

Usually digestive enzymes arent active until they reach the small intestines but if they start activating inside the pancreas ( due to inflammation or mixed signals or a stone blocking the duct from the GBladder or even unknown reaons) theyll start their work while still inside the pancreas digesting it. Then as they leak out into the small intestine, theyll continue their damage.

The pain is usually enough to send you to the ER--where theyll diagnose with blood tests for amylase and lipase as well as by history and exam.IF you ever suspect this make sure they take the bloods--Ive been sent home with a prelim dx of "gastritis" only to return hours later in danger because they didnt do the bloods!! Now I insist even if the area is only a bit twingy, with pain.

If you become chronic or have several episodes fairly close together, its important to not skip meals or go too long without eating as it seems to trigger a case. Also often pain starts to be less with each attack which isnt good--means the pansceas may be shutting down altogether.and the pain's warnings arent there.

Alcohol use and glalltones are the main risk factors as well as infections causing inflammation and some drugs (like tetracyclines)--most cases arent pinpointed--as environmental and genetic factors interplay.

If youre prone to gall bladder issues, the pain may feel both right and left as the pancreatic duct and common bile ducts are connected. And the inflammation will spread

This is considered a severe/life threatening condition!!

hope that explains it

as for cysts and tumors--I too have become "prone' to them since the Lyme/TBDs--its my opinion that the inflammation and the messed up immune signals the TBD causes may also make us vulnerable to these cysts.

Hey girls,

Trust me, pancreatitis will make you buckle. I had pancreatitis after a surgery. The doc who did the surgery is known for being very delicate and his patients 'never get pancreatitis." But, I did. I wonder why? Ha, back then, we were all clueless about my Lyme. That was in 2004. I had a cholecystectomy (gall bladder was infected (I wonder why..ha), and a week later I had an ERCP complicated by pancreatitis. OMG, that pain was so bad, I almost passed out just going wee-wee (while I was on a morphine pump!). I will never forget that feeling. I can still picture it. Can you tell?

In retrospect, I wonder if I got pancreatitis because of my undiagnosed Lyme. I certainly wasn't on probiotics back then. Oh well, I do hope and pray none of you experience pancreatitis. Who would ever think that probiotics could precipitate such an event? I though probiotics were pretty harmless.

Lymie - I love that you just put the words 'wee wee' and 'morphine pump' in the same sentence! haha!!!

I think my pancreas is the only thing working on me at the moment. Good to know about the probiotics and the pancreas - I bet most people wouldn't have a clue about that.

WOW,

A few weeks ago I went to a health fair. While there I saw a person who looks in your eyes and can tell you what is wrong or happening in your body. One of the things he mentioned was pancreas problems. He said there were issues with it and I definitely needed to strengthen it so it could get healthy, because it was not healthy now. I don't know anything about pancreas and really didn't take what he said seriously. BUT, I have had that pain under my ribs on many different occasions and have seen drs. who of course blew it off like I was crazy! This info is so impt. I take a lot of probiotics and now I know not to when I have this pain.

Once again, thank you all for sharing your knowledge and experiences!

AMY
