I'm needing to start taking an antidepressant again but am looking for one that works quick, costs less and has the least amount of side effects. I really don't want one that causes weight gain or sexual dysfunction. Took Lexapro 2 years ago and it worked really well once the insomnia went away but it's terribly expensive - $255.00 for a 90 mail order rx and that's with my insurance coverage.

Anyone have good luck with another and can make a recommendation? Thanks!

Hey there.

I dunno about the prices in USA, bu in Romania i was on zoloft for 4 years and with no insurance it only cost me 700 000 lei, which is like 30$ or less and that would be enough for a month. It's a strong one but makes u really happy, if u don get any side effects in the beginning. for me it worked great, but i also have ocd so thaz why.

If u want something milder, maybe u should try something based on fluvoxamine- thaz what i take now in Romania it's called fevarin. it made me thinner than when i was on zoloft, it gives me an inner peace and happiness, but it doesn't make me as high as the zoloft. in romania it's also quite cheap- around 30$ a pack as well. i dunno in the USA.

Sorry if im not of much help, thaz my experience with antidepressants. anyway, u should ask a psychiatrist and he should give you more information and u can collaborate on deciding which is best for u- u need a prescription anyway right?

hope everything will get better 4 u.

Hi there,

I've heard people having good results with zoloft, and seraquil I think it is, seraquil isn't so much an anti depressant, but a mood stabilizer, you might want to go that route, sometimes lymies have a hard time with antidepressants. They actually make me crazy, and I know many whove had the same issues. But possibly a mood stabilizer would help better....not sure. Did you have lyme 2 years ago when you were on lexapro?

I think most antidepressants work at the same rate of time...but my one friend swears by zoloft ....

Please do not take anything I say as medical advice. I am not a doctor.

Antidepressants are trial and error. One person can do great on one and another person can take the same medication and it effect them horribly. If you are looking at getting one that is less expensive, try one that comes in generic. Many of them do. I know Zoloft does. Some people have had great luck with St. Johns Wart and 5 HTP, which are natural substances that help with depression/anxiety.

Make sure to ask your doctor which anti-depressant is the best match for your symptoms. Ask if there is a generic version available. If not, ask what generic med is avaiable that fits your set of symptoms. Ask for samples. Docs get these for free and often want to get rid of them.

Oh, Wellbutrin is the best in terms of low sexual side effects. Also helps with low energy and irritability.

I am unable to take any drug in the antideppressant class. They cause violent reactions even on pediatric doses.

It is trial and error. I gave up on them. I take a zanax when I need something.

I discussed this with my dr. this morning and she said some folks have a good response to SamE. It's a natural over the counter supplement.

Have you had your hormones checked and your cortisol and Aldosterone levels checked?

All my hormones are at post menapause...I'm 33. My aldosterone is low too and I was DX with addisons disease. Depression is common when your hormones and corisol and aldosternoe level are low.

You may want to see an endrocrinologist. Also google Addison and Cushings dieases. THey both make you go a bit crazy.

Thete is a good clinic in Irving TX, the Endocrinology Institite of Texas. They don't treat Lyme and I wouldn't even try to explain Lyme to them. You're going their to check out your hormones, which lyme messes up, but mainstream med is in denial of that...so don't stress yourself out by telling them you have it!

Good luck!

I have been on PLENTY of them - and Lexapro worked the best...wellbutrin was good, Zoloft was also pretty good...took Paxil - which helped with the sleeping issues as well...

Those are the ones that I can remember. St. Johns Wort made me a bit nuts...didnt know that then - but looking back, it totally makes sense...

Definitely get the hormones checked...the Endocrine system can REALLY get messed up with Lyme. It nearly shut my adrenals down completely - which messed me up BIG time...I was just a shell of a person for 2 years because of it...
