No Azithromycin is not a penicillin. It falls in the same class as ZITHROMAX or those handy Zpacks that the doctors love to hand out. Most people that can not take penicillin have no problem with "myocin" type drugs.

Accalea, I am back on the doxcycline and azithromycin and tomorrow will try to take as much metronidazole as I can stomach. I am not tolerating the dox and azith. and although I am supposed to take them another week I think I will quit. I am discouraged since I cannot tolerate the antibiotics that I am supposed to take. I wonder if the next time my symptoms reappear if I could do it in another way-not antibiotics. Doug

Doug, one thing, I know they treat MS patients a lot of the time with steroids for inflamation. This is a bad thing for lyme. I had 12 shots into my spine which re activated dormant viruses (EBV, HHV6, can;'t remember the other), but from the research I've done, cortisone can do this, it inhibits the immune system, disseminates the lyme, ect, ect, just makes it harder to get well. So hold off on any prednisone type things if you should happen to be taking that.... just my thoght.

also, are you taking supplements? garlic, olive leaf extract, B12, B complex, I could go on and on, but immune system builders, so your own body can start helping to fight. No DO NOT give up on your dreams.

also, someone mentioned candida, symptoms are VERY similar to that of lyme disease, and is a very huge possiblitliy with all of us. Diflucan is the drug of choice for that if you go medical route, there's also other things at the herbal shops that can help. WIth many of us on long term abx, worth looking into. I just started diflucan, praying it will help with my symptoms

Please do not take anything I say as medical advice. I am not a doctor.

I know all about being sick from drugs. The best way to get through it is to try what works for you and not necessarily follow the directions that come with it. For some people taking with food works better for some it works better to take it on an empty stomach. Some people do better with dairy products than taking it with other food. I would tough it out until you are finished with this round. I know it can be very hard to put something in your mouth that you know is going to make you sick, but it something that we all have to do. I have posted some things about a garlic extract called Allicin, you should probably research that a little bit and consider it for the nexttime things get bad. I just noticed a posting about Diflucan, I would try the natural route first because all antifungals can very hard on your liver, and you will have to have your liver enzymes tested everymonth.

Thanks accalea, 2 weeks is going to be it for me with the doxcy. & azith. now I am going to do a week of the metronidazole if I can handle it. I certainly feel alot better after just 24 hours not on the first two.I used to take the first two with food. Then I read that the doxcycline was not absorbed well due to its bonding if taken without a 2 hour barrier before and after. Is cherry juice good for nausea?
