My lyme symptoms recently reappeared and I started back on doxcycline and Azithromycin.Although I have taken these before and for some extended periods, this time I am getting serious arthritic type pain in my left knee as a side effect. It was not a lyme symptom and only a very passive symptom that I had not on medications. If I keep taking the drugs above will it get much worse and is itusually ok to do this? I need these drugs and think maybe its the doxcycline which is paramount. Any suggestions? Doug

Doug, those are both pretty good drugs for this. You could be experiencing a herx, I know i have had new symptoms appear since starting treatment. Also, I've noticed that when I read most of the side effects of the abx, joint pain is usually one of them. If it's a herx pain it should diminish until the next herx (uaully about a 3-4 week cycle) , herxing is spirocete die off, and toxins they release. Also try taking a bath with epsom salt and peroxide, good for detoxing, and drink LOTS of water.

Jaime, thanks. I have heard my doctor mention the herx reaction without using that name.I wasn't sure if he was just "selling his goods" or if itwas true. I wonder if they could prove that in a double blind study.Anyway I am appreciative to be getting help and do not want to be contrary. I thought and my primary(not lyme literate doctor) doctor thought the headaches with nausea were migraines. I am 61 and have never had regular headahces or migraines. When I saw how bad migraines were and did some thinking I thought both1) ifthis were lyme reappearing I better get on it soon.2) if it made the symptoms go away then itwas not migraine because the abx do not help migraines(I think). While I know headaches can be a sign of lyme what about the nausea? I was also having a little diarhea. The way the symptoms presented themselves it absolutely did not seem like flu or viurs. It kind of came and went over a 3& 1/2 week period with no sore throat, cough , runny nose or fever. Thanks Doug

Doug, yes, nausea and diarhea are also symptoms of lyme. I'm not sure if the symptoms would present themselves in the "normal" maner with a relapse. And some people, it never presents that way. So I would definitly look into it.

Nope, the herx reaction is real. Although, some people are very lucky, and don't have one, or notice it, while it will completely debilitate others. I used to start twitching really bad when I would start a herx. Now I twitch and throw up for a few days each month. Then last time I got yet another new symptom, I am hoping it means I'm just doing some good killing.

Jaime, I actually thought I was out of the woods with this lyme thing after no symptoms for 3-4 months. I do not do well with most meds. especially these abx so my quality of life goes down alot. I think I am just going to gage what means most to me in life from here to the end and optimize. I also have MS however the only dehabilitating symptom is a growing tiredness. i had that before the lyme came on. Not feeling sorry for myself I am just about ready to stop seeking my dreams and starting focusing on a few passsions from here on.Thanks and good luck with yours-are there any hopes for cures on the horiizon? Doug

Doug:

I'm a little like you...Been feeling goood since the end of December, hoping this does not return. I'm not saying I'm 100 percent but I'm 85 I would say. I still have mild pain in my legs...

Also nausea and diarhea can be from over a million differt things...I used to blame everything on lyme, and have since stoped doing that....I had diarhea from the abx's I was on...I have nausea when I eat due to a bad stomach...I could go on and on...

Hang in there, it has to get better...

Julie

I am new here, and I am not sure how much or what I have heard about Lyme has been discussed here before.

Doug,

Do you know that Lyme can cause MS? Are you sure that your MS is really separate from your Lyme?

Digestive problems,

Many Lyme patients present with disgestive complaints as their primary complaint BEFORE they ever get into the kind of antibiotic treatments associated with this disease. Then there are the additional problems that come from the antibiotics. Probiotics are very important and there is far more than just acidophilus! Even with probiotics, because of poor immunity and heavy doses of antibiotics it is not uncommon for Lymies to get infections living in their guts. For those with plenty of diarrhea, one infection I would discuss with your doctor is C. diff. Most any lab can test for it. Other infections can be harder to detect. Genova (formerly Great Smokies) is much better than most. The best I know of is Metametrix, which can do a "Gastrointestinal Function Profile". Their rates are pretty high, but they negotiate better rates with some provides who send them a lot of samples. Besides telling you what is living in your gut, the funciton profile will give other information about how the gut is working.

Miss Martha, I have had the MS for years, with a cluster of symptoms that have not changed. The tick bite came only about 9 months ago with different symptoms. I do take Jarradophilus daily as a probiotic.I will keep that info on gut diagnosis it looks like a good source.Thank you Doug
