MDJunction to me

fluffyluggage"I found MDJunction at a time when I was struggling with so much. I
was so sick. I found a home, a place where people understood me, when
even my family doubted me. In MDJ, I found a place of refuge, love,
and support. I come here daily, to find my balance, to cope, and to
find that same support I've found from day 1. MDJ is my new family.
The friends I've made here will remain with me for a lifetime.

Lyme Disease ForumsGeneral & SupportFeet on Fire! Bartonella or Doxy reaction?

I just got my Lyme diagnosis less than 3 weeks ago, and have been on Doxcycline ever since. Doc said Western Blot indicated earlier stage infection, so I should be able to fight this quickly (crossing fingers). But in the last week the skin on the top of my feet and now my hands have been burning like mad intermittently throughout the day.

I have found the threads on this board regarding Bartonella and burning feet, and my stomach dropped at the thought of having coinfection. But when I googled Bartonella I didn't recognize any other symptoms in myself.

I have been in the sun and at the beach with the kids, and the burning is on the top of my feet and hands (where the sun would hit, and where I would likely neglect to sunscreen). So I am wondering (and hoping) if the burning is a reaction to being in the sun while on Doxy.

Does anyone have experience with this? Or know the difference between a bartonella burning sensation and a doxy sun reaction?

I am looking forward to getting to know this board more in the future. I thought my Lyme journey would be quick and easy.... Pop the pills and be done. But I am beginning to realize how complex this disease is. To complicate matters, it was not my normal doctor, or normal circumstances how I was diagnosed with Lyme, so I think with potential complications (cysts) I will be looking for a LLMD too.

Doxy and sun don't go well together. You can get sunburn really easily. Knowing that and taking precautions, I never got a sunburn yet while on doxy, but I nevertheless have other reactions.

When I go out in the sun, I am covered everywhere. I stay in the shade as much as possible. And still my hands develop some strange symptoms, which include burning, itching, and the weirdest of them all a sense of extreme tingling coldness when I hold my hands under cold water afterwards.

These effects can last a couple of days.

It is probably a build-up effect with doxy. Initially, I could still be in full sun for half an hour without any ill effects. Now, I just stay out of the sun as much as possible.

IMO your burning feet and hands are very likely a doxy/sun effect. I also have Bart. The burning with Bart tends to be more in the soles of the feet, although it can move as well.

My guess would be the sun/doxy response also.

Can you stay inside a while and see?

Also, I think the burning feet of Bart is on the bottom....correct me if it's not.

I just came back from the beach. This happened to the tops of my hands the entire week. Sunscreen and staying under the umbrella didn't help it. They continued burning the entire week, even at night. I am NOT on doxy, but I am on a lot of other abx. I have some theories, but no answers,

1- abx/sun/heat don't mix

2- heat/lyme don't always mix

3- some form of neuropathy - I have TONS of different neuropathies - set off by the sun/extreme heat exposure (we were there the week it was 106 degrees along the east coast)

Also, I have bart and the burning from that is usually on the bottoms of my feet and the palms of my hands.

Dxd March 2012 with Lyme, Babesia, and suspected Bartonella, after suffering for 4 years, and possibly having it even longer. Same as most others, I have suffered with a long list of terrible symptoms.
Also have POTS, RA and Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. Working with a LLMD.
