MDJunction to me

ThereseML"When I first came to MDJ, I was in need of peer support in dealing with issues of my childhood abuse. I was moving away from the painful issues and trying to find an uplifting group of people to help me transition to a thriver in my life. I found that here. I also found a group of peers with Fibromyalgia and found the same uplifting experience there. My computer crashed and it was a while before I found my way back, this time with issues related to Parkinson's Disease. I had tried a few other support sites before reminding myself of MDJ. On those, I never got a reply. I finally found my way back here and again found very supportive, caring and inspiring people who made me feel like I was 'back home'. Indeed I am." (ThereseML)

I understand why we can't have sugar or carbs, but why not dairy, gluten, or corn?

Dr Burrascano says you can. I've heard no. However, yogurt is a yes for our digestive system. I think if you get organic with no hormones or antibiodics added, you should be in the clear..but don't quote me on that.

Apparently it increases inflammation in our already inflamed bodies. I really struggle with this. I thought I ate really healthy: lots of whole grains, organic veggies, grass fed beef, etc. But now I'm learning that this diet is apparently bad too.

Lots of people talk about the paleo diet, which I just can't bring myself to do right now. I need to eat and I don't have the energy to cook some elaborate thing. I know paleo shouldn't be elaborate, but I tried it and it ended up being super time consuming. I think I was doing something wrong.

There are blood tests you can take to see if you have food intolerances. I did it several years ago and found that I was indeed sensitive to gluten, casein (dairy), soy, and eggs. What's left to eat? I tried for a few months to eliminate those foods and it was extremely difficult. I the end I didn't find that it helped much.

The single most important thing for me has been sugar and refined carbs. Hands down that has been the biggest problem in my health, and now I see it's because I am loaded with yeast.

I wish I could take a cooking class on paleo or something close to it. I like brown rice and probably won't ever eliminate that. Cooking and food are so hard for me right now, yet so important. I end up feeling guilty every time I put something with gluten and/or dairy in my mouth. This is not a healthy relationship to have with my food.

Anyway, sorry if that went off topic, but that particular issue is tough for me right now.

From what I am hearing from other Lyme's patient's, is that it is very a individual, just as the diseases presentation in all of us.

Some do better on high protein, low carb,; others do better on all vegetarian and so on.

Since our bodies are weakened by this disease, we all need to eat very healthy, but I believe the diet can vary. I think we have to do trial and error and elimimnate things and see how we feel. If we feel better without corn or dairy or another food, we can try to reintroduce it to see if we have a reaction to confirm.

Other than alcohol, sugar, caffeine and gluten being "NO NO" for Lyme's, the rest you will have to determine through trial and error.

I have had no problem with either. Carbs, as much as I consume have been no issue either. My biggest problem is protein. Meat and some fats, if not mixed with other things greatly, cause me quite a bit of greif.

I guess it all depends on which mix of bugs you got and so on. I do have problems keeping weight on. Without a good amount of carbs I loose weight a lot. So far, no yeast issues. (fingers crossed.)

Wow! I'm so glad this question was asked. Now I don't have to feel so bad that I'm eating poorly when I eat brown rice (for Goodness Sake!) I often feel so gross from other things, I can't pin my symptoms to food.

I hear so many mixed things about what to eat/what not to eat. I'm doing the gluten free/sugar free, no caffeine, alcohol thing, but when I asked my LLMD, he said that things in moderation are fine... I have been gf for about 2 months now and haven't noticed any difference? I don't know if I'm supposed to or not? I know it is healthier and everything, but sometimes it can be very difficult to follow.

My doctor told me to follow something called the gaps diet. I honestly noticed a huge difference once I switched. Here's the full list of do's and don'ts:

I know we have to be vigilant in this fight, but this disease is hard enough without imposing un-necessary restrictions without having demonstrated a need. So with that said, I think most aspects of treatment are so individual, especially diet. Cut back on things and if you are not improving maybe try being a bit more strict, but if it doesn't really help, I wouldn't make that the emphasis. Listen to your body and you will start to know whats good and what isn't, even in regards to gluten. Maybe a little won't hurt.
