In 19997, had my bullseye. Four and a half years ago, I had pneumonia which lead to the onset of my "fibromyalgia." The symptoms kept getting worse and I kept getting more symptoms, then Raynaud's, anemia, lost my gallbladder, etc. A year ago, I started getting neurological symptoms and worsening degenerative cervical & lumbar spine, and worsening arthritis. Etc.

Okay, here is my issue: Since 1992, I have been obese. I also retained water - a lot. But last fall, I started losing weight for no reason - no change in diet or exercise. In six months, I had lost 90 lbs., 70 of it in just three months. And in the last three months, I've lost 20 more. I also quit retaining water during this time.

Nine months before the weight loss started (Jan. 2006), I began to eat smaller portions. So, when I started losing, I thought "finally!" I certainly wasn't starving myself, though. I couldn't keep up with clothing. I had to go to the Salvation Army store because I didn't know when it would stop dropping off.

My husband, who had been trying to lose some extra weight, was puzzled...and jealous...in the beginning. Then we both got scared. I went to the doctor who noticed the problem before I even said anything, and he ordered a CT scan, endoscopy and colonoscopy. The only thing that was discovered was almost no motility in my intestines. He immediately suspected neuropathy, because I already had small and large fiber neuropathy. My neurologist thinks that it's autonomic neuropathy because I have other symptoms of it. So, I have tried to regulate it myself since the finding, but that only accounted for five pounds.

I had a hysterectomy in May, 2006. I am 47. I eat late at night. All of this should count against the weight loss.

The picture of me on this site was taken 3 months ago. I now look like my dad did right before he died with cancer. I've always looked much younger than I am - I was still getting carded after I turned 40. Now I look about 20 years older.

I eat more than my husband does. He tells me that I eat more than 2000 calories a day. I weight less than I did in high school and I was healthy (not overweight) then. I get very little exercise, just careful stretching.

For most of my adult life, I've considered 180 to be my idea weight because I look good and feel good. Right now, I weigh 130.

I am glad to have lost weight without trying, but not this much and not for an unknown reason. Have any of you Lymies had an issue like this?

Hey there....

actually, since having my kids, my weight has been all over. Ever since I was 14 I stayed at 125lbs.... after having my first child, I couldn't get under 140, then after having my second, I seemed to hover around 159 or so.... I had thyroid issues, (tumors), and now after 2 surgeries, I have no thyroid, and take medication for it.

But for no reason at all, I have steadily started loosing weight. I am now down to 140. I obviously don't get too much exercise because of the pain. I do have two little ones, but that's a fact for the past 5 years .... so why now?

I have had little to no appetite over the past 2 years, and have hardly ate a thing. Lately I've started forcing myself to eat more...usually I just feast on rice and beans....

I also have had cholesterol issues... and don't know why. Since I first had it checked at 18 it was high. (I was vegitarian in high school...shouldn't have been high) I'm not a big fast food eater. Don't eat much meat still...shouldn't be this high.

And for no reason what so ever, it's gone down to "within normal limits" after 10 years of my knowing it to be high.

I have no answers to so much of this lyme stuff. It's so crazy, and I think there is so much that we don't know about it... hopefully it will start to be taken seriously and there will be some studies on it...

Please do not take anything I say as medical advice. I am not a doctor.

Hi ladies from lymenet,

before i forget, lymenet is down again until MONDAY, JULY 9TH, Lou B estimated! It's a Time Warner problem w/server!

To you both, have you had the food allergies test done? That's where I found out I was allergic to:

gluten ... wheat/rye

casein--cow's milk, cheeses, egg whites, & garlic

I'm thinking this may be a possibility for you both. Do you have alot of diarrehea? Best wishes to you both to put some meat back on you!

Thanks Betty for the update, I was wondering.

They certainly are having problems with that site lately.

I used to have diahreah when I was younger, especially if I ate ice cream or milk stuff.... but now it's the other way around, but probably due more to meds.

I'm sure there are foods I should avoid, but I haven't tested foods yet.

The site www.fibromyalgiahope.com talks about food testing....good site btw some of you may want to check out.

I've had food allergy tests. It didn't turn up anything useful. It mentioned a couple of things that I already knew about. I'm also intolerant of certain food and I avoid them. This isn't the issue.

I want to repeat that I (1) Eat - a lot, and I'm (2) sedentary. I get between 2000 and 3000 calories a day. I'm older - 47...and had a hyst.

As for diarrhea, no. In fact, before they found the motility problem, I was almost 100% impacted. After the cleanout, I lost 5 lbs. I still have to work to regulate the motility, which is almost impossible, but it's not responsible for more than 5 lbs.

I haven't researched this, but is high cholesterol a Lyme issue?

Thanks for your suggestions.

lori

lori,

in my NON-MEDICAL opinion, NO, high cholesterol is NOT lyme related; many folks have this problem.

i don't think there are any RNs on this board; lymenet could tell you once they are up running again since there are around 100 RNs on the board!

Hi, I am new here so dont know how this all works. BOY that calendar in the log in page will drive a sane person NUTS!!!

I have 'heard' that the rapid weight loss is a babs thing. Others have issues with keeping weight on too. Others have said after treating the babs to beat it down, they regained!!

I can refer you to others that have had it,,,dont think I have,,but what do I know!! being--just don--

Thanks, justdon. I know that weight loss is a symptom of a couple of the coinfections, but it was SO much weight in such a short time, I'm still not used to it. Yeah, I had a feeling that this was a temporary thing. I was a size 17 and above for so long, and now I'm size 4. I guess if I don't want to gain all of this back, I'd better change my diet. I sure hope the water retention doesn't come back, too.

Thanks!!!

During the four months that I was at my absolute most ill (Sept, Oct, Nov, Dec 2007)I lost about 30 pounds in about 8 weeks. Weighed 145 to start with, healthy, fit, trim-looking. It's always nice to lose a little - -- - this was terrifying. I had changed nothing. I was actually UNABLE to exercise after 30 years of working out vigorously almost daily. I ate somewhat less because I had such discomfort/difficulty swallowing, but there was nothing that should have caused that weight. NOW - I've been greatly improved in health for the past 3/4 months (taking lots of doxy). My weight has suddenly shot up by 35 pounds, again, no reason! - I am exercising again, have always been careful about what I eat. My take is that Lyme has affected something in either my brain or physiology which has caused this. I don't mean to sound cavalier, but it is the least of my worries. I figure I'll get myself well and symptom-free, and then try to figure out what 'remainders' this terrible episode has left me with. But yes, I did have a very similar experience with the amazing, scary, rapid and no-cause-for weight loss.

Cheryl
