Unsure Okay, I was hoping some of you could settle this question once and for all.

Somewhere in the past, I read something about vitamin D being an aggravating factor in Lyme flareups. Because it does something to suppress the immune system.

Then other people ( especially among my friends in New Mex. ) have been telling me that it actually helps the immune system, so I cant get the story straight on this vitamin.

My doctor at Kaiser has insisted that I need more of this vitamin as my blood test for it shows I am too low. He thinks it will improve my immune system. And I think it at least explains why my teeth are not so strong.

Anyway, the big question is, does it or does it not help Lyme? Would love to hear peoples' experiences with this.

So far, I have been trying to add it to my regime, and seems like my head pressure worsens more when I take it. But not sure if that is the cause.

I wish I had solutions for everybody here who is suffering, but I am still hunting for them myself and seem to be more of a student on this board than a teacher. All I have to offer is my experience, support, and prayers based on what I have learned in my recovery. I am not a physician.

My opinion is that the immune system is completely irrelevant when it come to fighting lyme which makes vitamin-D also irrelevant. I mean if your immune system was so strong before lyme why did it not kill of the infection to begin with?

Note I have lyme and I also have vitamin D-deficiency. I am just not sure how much significance we should put to such a fact

Vicki,

I have heard both sides of this vitamin d discussion as well...and I have chosen to take vitamin d.

If you are low in vitamin d- your immune system will not be functioning properly. In my viewpoint- this is a much higher risk. Low vitamin d has been associated with MS and other autoimmune illnesses as well.

I have never actually tested "low" for vitamin d- by Quest's standards. I started this illness at 45...dipped down to 38...started supplementing it each day and am up to 58. Many naturopaths/LLMDs like this number to be around 70 for optimal immune function. I am planning on supplementing daily until I reach this and then reduce it to 1x/week.

Just my opinion on this...I know there are other opinions out there.

Hugs,

JackieSmile

I am confused by the vit D issue too. I have low vit D and have had massive doses at times to try to get it back up. Raising my vit D levels in the past have helped tremendously with my energy levels (first time tested it was 24).

I just got retested and was 35 so it's been dipping again. I decided to start supplementing since I know it can really help with energy.

I know that does not help with your actual question though Smile

Everyone should take Vitamin D., especially those with lyme..it helps with inflammation and depression.

I just had to bring my dad to my llmd thinking he was bit by a tick from the rash on his head..it was shingles.

The doc told him to take 15,000 units of Vit. D3 for 4 days for the virus and then go down to 3/5,000 per day after that.

My dad is like me and loves to sun himself..it's winter here in Maine now...he was depleted in his D. He also got a flu shot last month without telling me..Angry My doc and I both gave him a lecture on that one..

Most people are deficient..

All of my advice comes from research and personal experience. I strongly suggest that you each check with your doctor for approval before changing or adding anything to your treatment.

Peace . . . starts within each one of us. When we have inner peace, we can be at peace with those around us. When our community is in a state of peace, it can share that peace with neighboring communities, and so on. When we feel love and kindness towards others, it not only makes others feel loved and cared for, but it helps us also to develop inner happiness and peace. And there are ways in which we can consciously work to develop feelings of love and kindness. For some of us, the most effective way to do so is through religious practice. For others it may be non-religious practices. What is important is that we each make a sincere effort to take our responsibility for each other and for the natural environment we live in seriously.

I, too, was very deficient in Vitamin D. It is a very important factor in immune system health and therefore, overall health. After 2 rounds of prescription Vit D2 and 2 subsequent deficient blood tests, I consulted further with my primary care physician and soon took things into my own hands by taking 5000 IU's a day of Vitamin D3. In just a few months I am back in the normal range. By the next check in January, I may be able to cut the dosage back. I have also made vast improvements in my choices of food so that I am sure makes a difference too. My energy levels rose to higher levels, just feeling better overall.

The book "The Vitamin D Solution" by Michael F. Holick, Ph.D, M.D is packed with information about Vitamin D's essential role(s). It also gives great guidelines on how to get your levels back up without reaching toxic levels. Bringing it up is a fairly easy thing to do with supplements.

Let's be very clear, we are talking about D3. Right? Recently I've gotten some readin' on this subject. It did not mention if it is a "feeder" to disease(s) but talked about how important it is to have good levels of it for your body...system in general.

I wrote this in a post not too long ago... http://www.mdjunction.com/forums/lyme-disease-support- forums/general-support/1839136-treating-lyme/limitstart/ 170#3173155

Also many many ..most people are VitD3 deficient.. People don't understand that some of the pain can come from that.... Yes there is a test to test your "levels"..but the levels are NOT what most of us NEED.

so the test can be used a different way... Let's say they think your test of 50ng or less is fine...It is NOT.. it should be higher..

50ng/ml -or 158nm/L or HIGHER...

how the test can be used the interesting way..is this..lets say you are at 50ng...take some Vit D3 for up to 12 weeks...then have the test again...your test results should show some improvement...if not..you ARE vit D3 deficient... You can do a home test..if you can't find a Doctor to do it for you...(If you are in NY you can not!)(cheapest home test I found was close to 80$)

...Everything is important...lots of people like me find that just our Mag and D3 levels "balance" are too low for us to keep away the pain...

Now I am not a tech...or doctor..but I found it interesting that in another post I made on GcMAF...it ..if I read it right...can't work right if there is not sufficient D3???????

Now another thing...I heard or read that if you have lots of Mag in your system you are feeding Bart....don't know if that is true..but here's the kicker...

When I took the Leviquin it distroyed and took away every last drop of the Mag I had....the ONLY thing that is gettin' me back is high amounts of the mag...unless I want to be in pain walkin' on my kneecaps...

Through all that crap....I still have Bart symptoms in the exact same places....no change.......no worse......no better....

So...what are we supposed to do? deplete our bodies of all the things it needs so we can beat a disease..that seems to find a way to survive and hide anyways?

Gosh-darn-it! Vic....why can't you ask a simple question Wink Wink Smile

I would love to see more on this topic from others...I'm as fusterated as many here...when will we find cut and dry answers? lolSilly

~~~Hello,
~~~The only source I have heard of the advantage of depriving one's self of vit D is from the controversial marshall protocol and is considered to be dangerous by many. This protocol barely ranks at the bottom of the list of effective protocols.

~~~No one from this forum has claimed any success from it including myself. Please, someone correct me if I am mistaken.
My vit D tested at 19.6 only. doctor gave me prescription vit D that is 50,000 unt. you only take 1 a week. was told you should be between 50 and 80.
i am on about week 4. makes a huge difference. tinglies in feet are going away etc. also getting energy back (less need for naps)
if you look up vit D deficiency it can cause alot of symptoms real similiar to Lyme.
i would definitely take it and get your level up. i feel alot better since taking it
KittyKat...I'm glad it worked for you, but something throws me off.
The sourse a book written by a nurse.....said...NOT to take the kind from a doctor in script form.....
It is not the same as buying and finding a good product from health place.
So this adds to my confusion.. Why would she say that???
Ohh, and I never finished......but....as I was lookin' for a "better" Vit D product.....it comes from sheep!? Wool?
Again....this is an interesting topic...and makes you wonder all the rights and wrongs....
Geesh....never an easy answer...
Waxby....I don't know....I wish for you that you had some success...
It really....perhaps boils down to an individuals needs..or what is missing??
Again......Vic....you have done it again! perhaps the next question you askWink Smile like how many fingers on a hand...would be coolWink Laughing
regardless.....interesting....
