Has anyone experienced or know why you can have difficulty swallowing with Lyme? I have been on abx for 4 weeks now herxing on and off for the last 2. Yesterday I developed the feeling of a lump in the middle of the back of my throat. It feels almost like I have a big pill stuck there but I don't. I remember having this sensation when I was initially very ill a couple of years ago.

It's interesting that you posted this because I was actually just signing on to post on this very subject!

I'm sorry I cannot be of any help on this, other than to tell you,... someone else (me) is experiencing this very same thing. I feel like I have something caught in my throat, and it is driving me nuts. I had this happen a couple of weeks or so ago, too, and I thought I was going to go craxy, then it finally went away, but not this evening, it's back!

Anyway, I am curious what others will have to say regarding this as well.... You're not alone at any rate, LOL Wink

Anybody else have this happen??

(((hugs)))

A sensation in the back of the throat, like something is stuck, is very common with people who have GERD. It is called a Globus Sensation. It's an irritation of the nerves, but nothing is there.

I have had GERD for over 15 years, and have dealt with this all the time. But, how does that relate to Lyme?

Well, Lyme and Bartonella can cause big time GI problems, which includes gastric reflux, which is what irritates the nerves in your throat and causes the Globus. In addition, Bartonella can cause enlargement and irritation of the lymph nodes in your neck. This can also produce a Globus sensation of it's own.

If you are having reflux problems (acid backing up in the throat while you sleep), then raise the head of your bed about 4 inches. Keeping yourself on a slight incline keeps the acid down. Also, do not eat within three hours of going to bed, and do not drink a lot of water.

If you find that this works, you can try over the counter treatments like Prilosec (sp?). I have had med for my GERD (PPIs, or proton pump inhibitors like Nexium or Prevacid). They are good meds, but they can produce bad headaches in some people. I can't take Prilosec at all because of this.

It's not fun, I know. Maybe this helps some.

This makes a lot of sense. I do have Bartonella. I was actually wondering about both of those possiblities (reflux and lymphnode). I am not having any reflux at night or burping etc. but I do notice burning in the back of my throat after I take my vitamains/supplements especially Alpha Lipoic Acid. So I could be experiencing that Globus sensation.

Thanks

I have had GERD for about 14 years,.. Gastritis before that. Often symptoms that I have that come & go, such as the "lump" sensation... I forget about until it happens again so it's rough for me to say how often or how long symptoms have been around unless I have journaled it which I've only started getting better about doing again here recently.

I have to take 600mg of Zantac every day to keep the acid at bay... MD has me take 300 in the AM and 300 in the PM. My GERD has been at it's worst in the last 2-3 years, which again, seems to fall in line with being after I had the bull's eye rash so.....

And, I often prop up at night, too. Wink

I was convinced at one point that there was definitely something there, and no one could tell me different. It felt HUGE and was bothering me. I couldn't even sing in the shower or the car!

I went to the Ear, Nose and Throat doc, and he scoped me on the spot with those tiny thin scopes. He numbed my nostrils, took a look and there was nothing there. I was numb with disbelief.

He told me I was fine and if there really was something there, I would have probably been dead anyway. HA HA! He was so not funny!

Sorry. My point is you can always have it checked if it's upsetting you, or it becomes painful.
