MDJunction to me

"In the 3 months I have been with MDJunction I have developed a sense of calmness. I now friends who do not judge me because I have been a mental mess at times. It is such a good feeling to have friends I can tell my deepest thoughts and always get back to me with their support. I have never seen a therapist for long periods of time. Right or wrong, this is the best therapy possible for me. Thanks Roy for getting this up and running and making such a difference in my life. Sara" (saralaurie)

Is total loss of appetite related to lyme disease? I literally never feel like eating anything substancial. My stomach will grumble, but the idea of eating does not appeal to me at all. In fact, the only thing that ever sounds remotely tasty is anything with loads of sugar, which I know is a no-no. How do you make yourself eat? I almost don't trust myself to feed myself!

I think a lot of the problem is that if you are having a Herx, which I read another of your posts and it sounds like you are, you often feel very nauseated. And when you feel nauseated, it's hard to know what to eat, how to eat, and you just often don't feel like eating at all. One of the things I try to do is keep plenty of hearty soups in my house, organic soups that make me feel better. If I don't know what to eat, I often pull one of them out and heat them up. Even if I'm feeling nauseated, it will usually help settle my stomach. The other thing that seems to help a bit, and even though it's a little sugary, I keep peppermints around. They seem to help settle my stomach, and then I can eat something more substantial than just junk food. The little peppermint candies help a lot with nausea.

Also, eating very small meals at a time will help, IMHO. Don't stuff yourself, don't eat fast, chew well, and take your time. Let your body tell you what it needs. You know the nutrition that is best for you. I still allow myself to eat some junk at times, because if I'm truly craving it, I think that there must be something there...I choose things, tho, like dark chocolate, which has antioxidants in it, instead of just sugary sweets, if that makes sense. Also, chocolate has magnesium, if I remember, and your body needs it to help it sleep as well as...oh, darn it, I forgot--but I know it helps with your muscles, but I don't remember exactly what it does! Anyway, it's essential.

Eating fruits and veggies is very good for you. If you have a blender, sometimes making a shake is better for you, because you can sip on it, set it aside in the fridge (they don't stay good for long, but you can drink it over several hours if you need to), and then come back to it later if you need to, but you'll still get what you need, and it won't spoil. If you can't tolerate them raw, steaming them lightly will keep the nutrients intact, and actually, sometimes that's better for you...

It's knowing how your body will tolerate what you need that's the trick, and it's often just a matter of experimenting. If you don't cook, then keeping the stuff you need, the staples, on hand is essential. I make it a point to keep canned goods on hand. Just choose low-sodium versions where possible. And try to get organic, too. No more chemicals than you have to! If you have canned beans, try to rinse them before you use them, that'll get rid of the starches and extra salt that's been added...

Perhaps some of these suggestions will help. I know there are lots of other people here who can help. If you need anything else, or just want to talk, feel free to PM me. I really don't have it all together, I'm still struggling. I just take it day by day. But it's getting better. There's hope!

*hugs*

I am tired of seeking out new docs and getting the same result time and again...Forgive me if I seem bitter some days.

Yes, I also have trouble with my appetite... and yes Jen did seem to mirror my sentiments on the subject.

Also, I would add that it is very important that even when you don't want to eat, eat something anyway...the longer you go without the harder it will be to stomach later...plus you probably need food in your stomach to take some of your meds which ultimately helps to avoid uncomfortable side effects that could just make your problem worse. I struggle with this everyday. For me, it is definitely the nausea that does it.

I keep lots of fresh fruit and veggies in the house...that's where a good majority of our food budget goes. I often don't feel like cooking but you don't have to do anything but rinse off some carrots for a healthy, filling snack or maybe popcorn(the light kind?)...Anything that's prepared but still somewhat fresh helps so you can literally just put it in microwave or oven, etc... put a few of these pre-cut, cleaned whatever things together and you can manage a decent meal. The prepared stuff is more expensive, but you have to eat...and if it becomes a matter of not eating because you don't have the energy to prepare the food that was more cost effective or spending a few extra dollars and continuing to be able to fuel the fight, then I say spend...it doesn't have to be forever but can get you through the rough patches...in my case, my daughter's childhood! LOL Just kidding...kind of.

And I always keep some almonds in the house to munch on...flavored varieties too for salty/sweet cravings...

And then 1 piece of chocolate(I like dark also) at night. (O.K. So maybe 1 piece is more of a goal...lol)

Good Luck.

I do soups, too, when I'm not feeling well or when I don't feel like eating. I haven't even started any treatment yet, but I go through bouts of nausea, and I can usually still tolerate soup. Sometimes, for me, it's not even pre-nausea that keeps me from eating, but the post-nausea I get from eating so that even when I'm hungry nothing sounds good. But,.. I can still usually get a bowl of soup in me.

LOL @ Dharma!

Yeah, I have to agree with Dharma's idea of prepared foods. I think that's an awesome idea. I always try to keep some frozen stuff in the freezer than can at least PASS for meals! LOL Getting a good meal in is good. If you are feeling sick, honestly, the good stuff that has lots of fat, like Michealina's or Budget Gourmet is better than Lean Cuisine, sometimes, but try to get a combo. In my grocery store, much of it goes onsale frequently, so I buy it at times when it's on sale, and just buy what I think I'll eat when it's on sale...I don't keep a LOT, cuz I don't want it to go bad, but I keep what I could use. And then use them if it'll work for me. Most of them are complete meals. Many of them--in fact, most of them, taste pretty good, too, IMHO...

Good luck! *hugs*

Kstuff, it's pretty typical of LD, I know so many people , including myself, who have this issue. Every now and again I'll get actually hungry to where eating sounds good, but usually, I eat just to survive, if at all. I have to force myself to eat half the time. Breakfast is the worst.

prepared foods is a great idea for the family that needs fed. I used to love to cook, and that's gone by the wayside too.

Please do not take anything I say as medical advice. I am not a doctor.
